IMO, considering what Americans are going through right now with the crisis of the COVID-19 Pandemic, you would think that some consideration would be given to voters during this time. Also, I would love to see absentee voting taking place in every state for the general election in November. Guess that would never happen if the republicans get their way, they would prefer to suppress American voters in any way possible.

Ginsburg Blasts Conservative Justices Who Blocked Wisconsin’s Absentee Voting Extension

“Either they will have to brave the polls,” Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote in her dissent, “or they will lose their right to vote.”

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg excoriated her conservative colleagues over their decision to deny Wisconsin Democrats’ request to extend the deadline for absentee voting in the state’s election on Tuesday, despite concerns over the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

In a 5-4 vote on Monday, the Supreme Court’s conservative bloc refused to extend the absentee voting deadline by six days, saying instead all mail-in ballots must be postmarked by Tuesday and received by April 13.

Democrats had pleaded with the courts to give more leeway to voters as COVID-19 wreaks havoc around the nation, infecting more than 366,000 people and killing more than 10,000. The nation’s top public health officials have urged Americans to practice social distancing and to remain at home as much as possible, directives that run counter to entering a crowded polling place.

Ginsburg, who was joined in her dissent by the three other liberal Justices, said her conservative colleagues’ decision to see the election proceed as planned would effectively strip many Wisconsinites of their right to vote “through no fault of their own.”

the most leftwing member of the court complaining about conservative justices? Wow, that is earth-shattering news.

Is there a provision in the law to extend the date? If there is no provision to extend the date, the court acted correctly. They aren't empowered to make it up as they go along.

Republicans all over the country applauding this decision.

It's not about decency during a pandemic.

This isn't your great grandfather's Republican party and it certainly isn't the party of Christianity.

How can the court rule on what they feel the law should allow rather than what it does allow?

The rule of law seems to be something hateful to many on the left

Wisconsin primary election: Supreme Court’s absentee ballot ruling attacks voting rights - Vox

Republicans have fought tooth and nail to make it hard to vote in Tuesday’s election

The Supreme Court’s decision in Republican is the capstone of a weeks-long effort by the Republican Party to make it difficult for voters to actually cast a ballot in Wisconsin. Last week, Gov. Evers called the state legislature into session and asked it to delay the election. But the Republican-controlled legislature ended that session just seconds after it was convened. After Evers acted on his own authority to delay the election, the state’s Supreme Court voted along partisan lines to rescind Evers’s order. Republicans also rejected Evers’s proposal to automatically mail ballots to every voter in the state.

The background is that Republicans hope to hold onto a seat on the state Supreme Court, which is up for grabs in Tuesday’s election. As law professor and election law expert Rick Hasen recently noted, “only 38% of voters who had requested an absentee ballot in heavily Democratic Milwaukee County had returned one, compared with over 56% of absentee voters in nearby Republican-leaning Waukesha County.” So there’s at least some evidence that, if additional voters are unable to return their ballots, Republicans will be overrepresented in the ballots that are counted.

It’s also worth noting that, if Wisconsin had free and fair elections to choose its state lawmakers, Evers would most likely have been able to work with a Democratic legislature to ensure that Tuesday’s election would be conducted fairly. In 2018, 54 percent of voters chose a Democratic candidate for the state Assembly. But Republicans have so completely gerrymandered the state that they prevailed in 63 of the state’s 99 Assembly races.

There is far more at stake in Wisconsin, moreover, than one state Supreme Court seat. Wisconsin could be the pivotal swing state that decides the 2020 presidential election. The question of whether Donald Trump or Joe Biden occupies the White House next year could easily be determined by which man receives Wisconsin’s electoral votes.

And the Court’s decision in Republican suggests that the Supreme Court will give the GOP broad leeway in how US elections should be conducted.

“The question here is whether tens of thousands of Wisconsin citizens can vote safely in the midst of a pandemic,” Ginsburg wrote on Monday. “With the majority’s stay in place, that will not be possible. Either they will have to brave the polls, endangering their own and others’ safety. Or they will lose their right to vote, through no fault of their own.”

She continued: “That is a matter of utmost importance — to the constitutional rights of Wisconsin’s citizens, the integrity of the State’s election process, and in this most extraordinary time, the health of the Nation.”

Sounds reasonable.

Then again, I'm human, not an extreme partisan moron and understand that these are unprecedented times. The threat of COVID to public health in general is real and we should all be looking at ways to limit possible problems.

Completely understandable, but the fault there lies with Wisconsin's governor and legislators unable to work out a solution.

What provision of law allows for the demanded extension?

Florida and Georgia are completely toast as far as the 2020 Presidential election goes. Voters will be purged as you have never seen before. I’m also curious if this will happen in Ohio as well.

But that’s not the end of it. Democrats in Wisconsin are being advised to stay home, and Republicans are being told to go out and vote. It’s not hard to see how this plays out.

Yes, tomorrow people will die as a result, but, well, that’s just how these things go.

Good. Democratic efforts to undermine the integrity of elections through frivolous lawsuits are usually successful, it's good to see them fail for once.

The deadline was already extended. As long as the ballot envelope is postmarked by election day, and received by 13 April, the ballot is counted. That's a whole week for the ballot to wind its way from the backwater dregs of Cheese-land to the backwater capital of Cheese-land to be counted. What more consideration do you expect? Serious question.

Can't imagine many people will be showing up to work the polls or vote.

'It Is A Criminal Violation': Wisconsin Law Enforcement Weigh In On Enforcing 'Stay-At-Home' Order
Officials: Communities Are Voluntarily Complying To Order

With Gov. Tony Evers' "stay-at-home" order in place, Wisconsin law enforcement agencies say they are prepared to enforce the order in their communities.

The order, which went into effect on March 25, will stay in place until April 24, unless another order is made.

As part of the order, Wisconsinites are only allowed to leave their homes to do essential things, like going to the doctor, the pharmacy or the grocery store. People are allowed to go outside to exercise, but they are required to practice social distancing and keep 6 feet between themselves and others.

Although people don't need permission to leave their homes under the governor’s order, law enforcement agencies do have authority to enforce the order and issue citations. Agencies in Eau Claire, Madison, Washington County, Milwaukee, Rock County and others took to social media to share their thoughts on the order and to let the public know their agencies' roles.

Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales sent out a YouTube video encouraging community members to voluntarily comply with the order. He also said that Milwaukee police officers would be in the community to answer any questions residents might have.

Rock County Sheriff Troy Knudson has been posting updates on the Rock County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page to keep his community involved and updated on enforcement.

"Health and the safety of our community is our highest priority," Knudson said in a video. "This is not the time to worry about citations or arrests or something like that. We are just trying to make sure that everybody takes the best possibly care of themselves."

A stay at home order on election day. :doh

Sure, we all know Right Wing fascists lose when everyone votes.

Looks like Republican scumbag voter suppression goes all the way to the SCOTUS. Remember in November and beyond. Vote against every one of them.

and 2020 Republicans are giddy about this new way to win elections.

come on. if nothing else shows that they want a low turnout, it's forcing voting deadlines during a pandemic.

they're gonna win an election because smart people decided to stay home and live (and not kill their parents, kids, neighbors).

that says it all doesn't it?

Their strategy is win at all costs. That will have to be countered.

I personally do not see how coronavirus should affect ABSENTEE voting in any way whatsoever.
