Ginsburg Blasts Conservative Justices Who Blocked Wisconsin's Absentee Voting Extension

Holy Crap

A voter just sent me this video of the line outside a polling location at Riverside High School in Milwaukee

Is there a provision in the law to extend the date? If there is no provision to extend the date, the court acted correctly. They aren't empowered to make it up as they go along.

Can it really be that simple? Yes it can.

they're gonna win an election because smart people decided to stay home and live (and not kill their parents, kids, neighbors).

that says it all doesn't it?

Who is "they"?

I personally do not see how coronavirus should affect ABSENTEE voting in any way whatsoever.

...if you already have your ballot.

The absentee ballots are not going to make it into people's hands by today, thus disenfranchising them.
Assuredly, Wisconsin is going to pay for this decision(to hold the election today) with thousands of lives.

People have had time to get their absentee ballots in hand if they had requested them in a timely manner. This date for the election was not some last minute change and the Governor exceeded his authority by trying to issue an executive fiat that was not in compliance with state law. Sucks to be a slowpoke but them's da breaks.

It is the states job to get the absentee ballots in the voters hands in a timely manner. The request was to delay the postmarked dates because the government was not able to send out all requested absentee ballots in time. The US supreme farce decided that was not so.

Coronavirus came here to US in January. It is now April. You snooze you lose. My local elections are next month. I will vote in person or I won't go. Either way, I won't be a victim and special pleading if I decide it isn't worth the risk.

And if your local elections were to have been scheduled this month, they would have delayed them. Just like they should have delayed this vote.
You have a right to vote, pretending this is about being a "victim" or about "special pleading" might be fine for you, but it's denying other people who care about voting their constitutional rights.

IMO, considering what Americans are going through right now with the crisis of the COVID-19 Pandemic, you would think that some consideration would be given to voters during this time. Also, I would love to see absentee voting taking place in every state for the general election in November. Guess that would never happen if the republicans get their way, they would prefer to suppress American voters in any way possible.

The Wisconsin Governor issued an executive order to postpone the election until June 2020, and the Supreme Court rejected the Executive Order because the Governor doesn't have the authority to do this (which Governor Tony Evers had previously stated himself). This is the responsibility of the state legislature to postpone the election and not the executive branch.

If you didn't know the date, you failed yourself.

Her comments are political BS.

The state supreme court said the governor did not have the power to do this unilaterally. The US supreme court said the governor did not have the power to do this unilaterally. We live in a democracy and not a dictatorship and the virus does not give the governor the right to circumvent the law. People are not being denied any right. They can haul their arses to the polls or stay at home. They are free to do either.

You can pretend all you want, but having 5 polling stations for all of Milwaukee in the middle of a pandemic with no other timely alternative is akin to a poll tax. Not to mention a heath crisis.
Indeed, the supreme courts have decided, in a partisan manner, that he does not have that power, but this decision is going to disenfranchise voters and kill others simply to win an election. You may cheer that on: I don't

You not voting is what's best for the country.

It is not "akin to a poll tax" and if upholding the law is "partisan" then you are in the wrong country, comrade.

If someone were to propose closing 97% of all polling stations in rural Wisconsin, would you consider that a poll tax?

Imagine supporting a political party that's afraid of voters.

This demonstrates the lengths Republicans will go to to suppress voters and how little Republicans really believe in democracy.

Trump even said so when discussing the $2 trillion aid bill: "The things they had in there were crazy. They had things, levels of voting that if you ever agreed to, you would never have a Republican elected in this country again," Trump said on "Fox & Friends."

The "crazy things" Democrats tried to include in the bill were funds to enable states to offer vote-by-mail for the November election. That would be a Republican nightmare: voters voting.

No it just shows that democrats don't give a crap about the law if they think that it would help them in an election. The DEMOCRATIC governor issued an illegal order that was stopped by the courts at both the state and federal level. There is no "republicans" in this formula.

MAGA = Make America A Giant ****hole.

the most leftwing member of the court complaining about conservative justices? Wow, that is earth-shattering news.

I read the Wisconsin Supreme Court met by video conference. Got to love it.

The "most leftwing member of the court" is Sotomeyer. Try to fail less.

Yes there is. "Republicans" are all over this, like sh*t on stink.

Republicans in the state legislature refused to pass a bill postponing the election, which led to the Governor ordering the postponement. Then Republican justices on the state supreme court and then Republicans on the US Supreme Court ruled against the Democratic governor.
