Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg once said that farming and factory jobs don't require much gray matter, as opposed to information-era jobs.

In a 2016 talk at Oxford University in England, a clip of which went viral over the weekend, the 2020 Democratic presidential contender belittled both agricultural and industrial jobs as simple and simplistic.

"I could teach anybody, even the people in this room" to be a farmer, he said, calling agriculture "a process."

"You dig a hole, you put a seed in, you put dirt on top, add water, up comes the corn," he said.

I doubt that Bloomberg has much farming experience. He should stick to sin taxes and making sure that no one is smoking at the Co-Op.

... and Constitutionally questionable police tactics. (Can't leave that out.)

Yeah, that should really bring out the minority vote. Derp

You know a lot of people keep saying Trump is dumb, but it seems the Dems keep proving they are even dumber.

Equality and equal protection of the law can help Labor with obsolete skills focus on upgrading their skills in a market friendly manner than any work ethic from the obsolete Age of Iron in modern Information Age times. Unemployment compensation is for capitalism's natural rate of unemployment not any form of work ethic at law, in any at-will employment State.

If Bloomberg had more 'gray matter' then he would realize that the support of manufacturing and agricultural workers are necessary to get him elected to national office. Just because one job is easier to learn than another does not make those performing those easier to learn jobs any less important - each worker gets at most one vote. Steaks tastes just as good and are thus in demand regardless of how much skill it took to get the cattle to breed, eat grass and drink water.

Pathetic.

You would think Democrats would be more careful with that, but some of these candidates have a very arrogant assumption on who a minority should vote for.

It could be argued that Democrats have done less for minorities in recent times just because of the assumption of that support and vote, basically reducing the whole thing down to reliance on half-assed treasury promises to keep that support to varying degrees of moderate success down to complete failures.

Then you get a guy like Bloomberg who can personally buy his way into better polling numbers, can have a background of belittling farmers (and others,) and support breaking the Constitution directly impacting those minorities and it ends the debate on DNC expectations of their base groups.

If I were part of the DNC I would be asking others "what the hell are we doing?"

We have two very rich white guys running, several relics of the party one of which has a questionable past with the DNC (Sanders,) and two moderates that fit the bill on how Carter, Clinton, and Obama came to be and odds are they will be knocked out (Klobuchar and Buttigieg.)

The DNC's path to the Presidency in the modern era has been an outsider with minimal to moderate time up on the hill, you would think they would stick to that process.

I am legitimately surprised that this is where the Party is today.

As I've said in another thread, it may be a very outside chance but we might end up seeing two very wealthy egomaniacs in Bloomberg and Trump each supported by situational ethics arguing about what is best for the nation via Authoritarianism and pure ignorance of the Constitution.

1. The Washington Time is fake news.

2. Computer programming does require more skill than manual labor jobs.

But at least we know the difference between singular and plural!

STOP THE PRESSES!!!!!!!!!

A city slicker doesn't understand country bumkins!!!!!! I am truly shocked!!!!!!!!

Having been in farming/ranching for a few decades now, having an IT wife for as many decades I think the comparison is apt, if a bit too broad brushed. Now most larger family farms are actually corporations, they require a bit of grey matter- and a good lawyer, accountant, friend or a seat at the local bank, good connections with local politicians, an good investment team- most fam/corp owners have as much invested off farm as on farm.

But I get the idea from the wording of the article- the Right is worried Bloomberg can out-tRump The Don. The right had to safeguard the fly-over states where farmers are a bit put-off by tRumps posturing 'easy to win' trade war. tRump loses ground there and he can expect subpoenas the day after the democrat is sworn into office.... ;)

Farmers and factory workers shouldn't be fooled into thinking The Don gives a rat's rump. Both factory worker and farmer are pawns in tRump's warped weird game. Neither has anything big to point to as tRump is a genius, after all the fanfare the real result is more job loss, more market share loss, and more bankruptcies...

But truly self made city slickers are all in favor of IT jobs to replace factory and farm jobs....

How shameful!!! Why we should subsidize soft coal and turn a blind eye to the mine owner's safety records so coal miners can continue deeper and deeper into the ground and continue to die rather than convert to IT jobs. We'd still have buggy whip makers if tRump was in charge back then-

Well not really, tRump and his MAGA crowd could no more stop the transition to the mechanized age as they can now stop the transition to the IT age... :peace

Farming at the very least is not simply manual labor. In point of fact, the skillset for farming is quite diverse. Factory jobs vary. Some are pretty simple, many require actual specialized knowledge, much like computer programming.

The point is, it is simply more convenient for Labor under our form of Capitalism if they can obtain unemployment compensation at the Rock Bottom Cost of a form of minimum wage an alternative wage for simply being unemployed; Capitalism works better with capital involved.

Labor should be able to quit or merely be unemployed to collect unemployment compensation in an at-will employment State.

With such a public policy, Labor can re-tool for modern times in a market friendly manner that conforms to our laws regarding employment at the will of either party in our at-will employment States.

Why does your reply to my post have exactly nothing to do with what I said?

The second that Hillary lost to Mango the Clown, the DNC should have pulled out all of the stops in finding someone like Obama to run in 2020. This was their most important job, and they didn't do it.

Some farming jobs are very simple as are some factory jobs.

The Washington Times is like the Daily Mail, it's fake news.

If Bloomberg really said these things, we probably need to look at the context in which he said these things.

You will need to train someone to do computer programming and it will take longer to train them.

Go ahead and automate Capitalists; we need a fifteen dollar an hour minimum wage for Labor in our First World economy anyway.

True Capitalists should feel, thoroughly goaded.

Some farming jobs are very simple as are some factory jobs.

Even a farmhand is expected to have a pretty diverse skillset, from being able to precision drive farm equipment, to being able to maintain that equipment, to having some veterinary knowledge, and so on and so forth. Farming is much more complex and information driven than most nonfarmers realize.

Sure, you should always look at context, no matter who is reporting it. All for profit media is profit driven, so there is more money to be made in controversy.

You will need to train someone to do computer programming and it will take longer to train them.

Longer to train them to what level of proficiency? It will take years of training to reach a point where a farmer can successfully profitably run a medium sized farm. Can a farmer do farming tasks before that point? Sure, but then again, I can learn to make a Hello World popup in Windows in less time than it would take me to learn to be proficient at C#.

That was, after all, the reason for the thread before it became something else.
