The country is divided into two hostile camps, a division as much geographic as ideological. On one side are the big cities, the centers of progressive politics and home to social movements for women, for gay people, for minorities, and to an unprecedented wave of immigrants. Many of the immigrants look and dress very differently from residents of longer standing, marking them as followers of a different religious faith. Many are refugees from an unprecedented wave of war and civil war. Many have entered the country illegally.

Then there are the rural areas. These have always been conservative, but now economic hard times and a pervasive feeling of humiliation are driving their conservatism to a new level of anger. People in rural areas attribute much of this humiliation to urban liberals who seem to care more about refugees and minorities than they do about their country cousins. The country people are statistically much more likely to have served in the armed forces and they feel that their patriotism contrasts with the deracinated, increasingly foreign cities. Religious faith, especially evangelical Christian faith, is central to life in the country. Rural people often see the cities as nothing but cesspits of every conceivable kind of vice.

Into this volatile mixture comes a politician who thrives on the exploitation of anger. He tells the suffering rural people that those urban elites, the religious minorities, and much of the rest of the world are responsible for their troubles. He is willing to say things that no other politicians would dare to utter. The rural people respond by giving their votes overwhelmingly to him. Soon the strange new politician is in power.

But this is not the United States in 2018. It is Germany in the early 1930s.
...

this was a surprising start of a story for me
i was stunned by the comparisons made
here is the rest of the story

I am not stunned by the comparisons. Everybody just has to compare Trump's administration to the rise of the Nazi Party in the 1930's. It's stupid and dumb, and I wish people would stop doing it with every president that they don't like.

Wow. Someone actually gets it.

The FAILED INTELLIGENTSIA! are responsible for both the coming of Trump and the mismanagement of the coming of Trump.

They show some signs of wising up, but no where near enough, and it has taken a very long time to get even a little bit down the road.

The important part of the article was this.

Is this a valid comparison of social conditions in 2018 America and 1930s Germany?

That division has been going on for a while, way before Trump became president. Obama helped divide this country more too.

Trump isn’t the real problem

Oh yes! He is! Right here, right now ... djt and his "miss-administration" is the REAL problem! Little djt is our NATIONAL problem.

No, its the government, and political parties that are the problem.

I read that part. And no, it isn't. 1930's Germany and present-day America are both two entirely different places. The Nazi party rose to power due to a variety of factors, due to the consequences of World War !, and the Treaty of Versailles screwing Germany over almost entirely. That is not comparable to today. Comparing everything that we dislike to Nazi's is not helpful.

Are you saying that the urban-rural divide was not a factor in the nazi’s rise to power.

The reason Trump was elected was b/c We're tired of political correctness, and want actual change.

Bruh the Republicans hate him just as much as Democrats. They're the problem, they're against him.

The more the better, but so far, not enough of them. Thank God enough Americans are against him to mitigate the damage he's able to do.

No, I'm saying that trying to compare the Trump Administration to the Nazi Party's rise to power is just ridiculous. Two entirely different situations.

Yea ok. Because there aren't any Americans that actually believe in making this country great and not turn into what is going on in Europe?

What is political correctness? Why was/is political correctness a major issue?

“Actual change” from what to what? Why?

Was it because Obama was black?

You've never heard of Political Correctness? Its a major issue b/c its dividing everything.
