I think you are not particularly clear on what fake news actually is.... it is a news story written without any or very sketchy foundation. Stuff that you find in the National Enquirer or on Infowars.

What you fail to grasp is that the NYT has a journalistic rigor that does not allow them to publish fake news. Though sources of stories need not be revealed, they must be collaborated and the source has to be deemed in a position to know before the story can go to print. The reporter reports to his editor, who verifies the collaboration and standing of the source.

Now many stories do not have named sources, but that is how you get inside information. It is good to be skeptical of stories, but to catagorically dismiss them is to show ignorance of American journalism. You don't have to take the story as fact, but history will show that it is far more probably true than not.
