So, Trump threatens to cut off the press from asking him questions. Is that even legal? Should he be impeached if he even tries?

I'd say that even a few Republicans will turn on him if he goes there.

I suspect it's legal.

But it is not conducive to transparency and the democratic process.

I'd impeach Trump on general principle if I could. But unfortunately, I don't see anything specifically impeachable here.

As far as I know, it's perfectly legal for him to do so.

3 legal votes here...

What Trump and Congress can't do is pass laws that strip away the 4th estate by violating rights given in the First Amendment.

If Trump shuts down the press interviews and opts for a more... "Ministry of Trump's truth" approach. The ramifications and counter-response would be to invigorate the 4th estate to come after him harder and harder, wanting to break the story, that Trump is so obviously covering up. As well as reflect HORRENDOUSLY on the Republican party causing electoral losses.

Hmm... does exercising the 5A violate the 1A? ;)

I don't think that Trump, of all people, could possibly remain silent - he spews out stuff constantly whether asked to or not.

As long as the GOP and their Con Media allies keep spewing hate at the gays, the Mexicans and Muslims, and the Clintons a good part of the Republican base won't give a damn about Russia, about Trump's lies, or shutting down the press coverage of the WH.

The GOP no longer even needs to govern, all they have to do is push their agenda of hate, and they will get a pass on all their other lies and BS.

I'm with you brother.. The Party of Lincoln no more.. It's the Party of Trump.. and by extension of Bannon.

Oh calamity, I'm worried about you. You need to pace yourself. With almost eight more years of President Trump to go, you are going to give yourself an ulcer or something at this pace. :)

Take a break, take a deep breath, relax, and try to spend at least five minutes not daydreaming about the President.

But no, the press has no subpoena power over anybody. You don't have to talk to them, I don't have to talk to them, nobody has to talk to them.

Sadly for the TDS crowd, the President actually has to break a law before he can be impeached. Well... More accurately, the House has to say he broke a law.

He won't last 8 years. Hell, at this rate, I'll be surprised to see him make it through the summer.

I really hope you are wrong. Trumps economic policies so far have helped business and removed the several regulations and barriers created by Obama.

The economy is booming and with Trump's tax plan, that would create a very strong recovery. If you look at the market since Trump has become President, business has been booming. You can see it at apple stores and retail. Removing Trump as president could create a deep recession.

Trump is a buffoon. But, we know you think he hung the moon.

Are banks failing Calamity? Is the auto industry going out of business? How about the unemployment rate?

Things are a lot better when Barack was president. I don't know if you remember, our economy collapsed during his presidency.

Do you believe Barack's presidency just popped up out of the ether? You must have never heard of George W Bush and the recession he left behind.

Blame Bush, the mantra of the left.

Obama: Everything bad that happened can be blamed on Bush and everything good happened can be credited to Obama.

Trump: Everything bad that happens can be blamed on Trump and everything good happens can be credited to Obama.

The economy collapsed before Obama became president, Bucky.

A real man would be thanking Obama for the economy he handed off .

He can't stop them from asking. But it would be perfectly legal for him to refuse to answer. But if the administration stops answering questions then I will once again start listening to what the "anonymous sources" say since that will be the only source of information.

lol...trouble is, Bush really did leave Obama an economy which was in the dumpster. Trump, OTOH, was handed a pretty good economy with low unemployment and a fair amount of growth.

My copy of the First Amendment prohibits Congress from making any law abridging the freedom of the press. Nothing in it requires the President to do anything at all.

They didn't say they were going to stop answering questions. They are thinking about ending the press conference, and answering all questions in written form. I just watched a segment on TV. Sorry, I didn't catch the guy's name, but he said answers in written form cannot be misquoted "like the press likes to do".

Your mistake is believing Obama would have done anything different from Bush. He woudn't have.

Even trump's 36% will notice this .

Oh, he'll be around for both terms. People care about jobs and safety, they don't care if the President is being mean to the press. Outside of the TDS bubble, the country is yawning.

I think your post are among the most entertaining on the board. I would truly miss you if you had to take time off for recovery. If you pace yourself, you will still be going strong on January 20, 2025; President Trump's last day in office.

I want Ryan/McConnell to keep trump around until 8/8/18, 44 years after, and close enough to the election .

He can say anything he pleases making press conferences a scam much like his career

Would Trump Refusing to Answer Press Violate the First?

no, there's nothing in the first amendment that requires a president to field questions from the press. cutting off all contact with the press would be a colossal mistake, though. even threatening to do so was a mistake.
