Recreated face of Queen Nefertiti sparks 'whitewashing' race row | Fox News

What was supposed to be a historical reconstruction project, showing the face of King Tut's biological mother Queen Nefertiti for the first time, has turned sour, amid accusations of whitewashing.

The Travel Channel, as part of its series "Expedition Unknown" with Josh Gates, will showcase 3-D imaging technology to map the mummy of Nefertiti's face and create a replica. Paleoartist Elisabeth Daynès, who had previously recreated King Tut more than a decade ago, sculpted the bust of Nefertiti, which was then compared to images of her face.

"This remarkable face seems to be consistent with ancient representations of Nefertiti," said Egyptologist Dr. Aidan Dodson of Bristol University in a release. "It's extraordinary. When taken alongside the latest reading of the genetic data, this provides us with truly exciting evidence that the mummy of the Younger Lady is none other than Queen Nefertiti herself. It is in the comments about Nefertiti's looks and the subsequent 3-D modeling that have sparked criticism.
The Sun reports that some on social media have pointed out that Nefertiti appears to have a lighter skin tone than is believed to be accurate.

What do you say, was Queen Nefertiti whitewashed or is this an accurate portrayal? Does it even matter?

By many accounts Egypt at that time was a multi-national society and without actually being there, it's hard to say. I do agree with one of the twitter users that I would see Iman as being more representative of what she may have looked like.

I agree that she appears too white. Do Egyptians look like that? She looks like a slightly tanner Drew Barrymore.

Also, last time I checked the American Christian right still portrays Jesus as white. So, until they undo the white washing of Jesus the rest of it won't follow.

It entirely could be a 100% accurate portrayal of her, we don't really know. Though there were some subsahran Egyptian people... Nefertiti certainly was not one of them. Modern Egyptians have more subsaharan genes than ancient Egytians did.

I personally think this is jumping the gun to try to complained about white people.

If no one can really know, and that's probably true. Then why not make the statue in the likeness of a more African woman?

No... we know Neferiti was not Sub Saharan African... for almost certain fact... but we don't know the degree of how "European" she looked, she could have looked more Arab, more dark Egyptian.

Modern day Egyptians have more subsahran african genes than they did in the past.

IIRC....Egypt has a wide spectrum of skin tones, just as many nations do.

Light, Dark......I suppose because we have never seen a poloroid of her, its pretty much up to the artists interpretation....no sense getting butt hurt over trivial minutia.

Shhh...next you will be telling us Santa Clause was Turkish. Oh wait, he was.

She couldn't possibly be Egyptian, she looks nothing like either Theda Bara or Liz Taylor.

Recent DNA analysis of the earliest known human remains from the British Isles, show those inhabitants were dark skinned, but not having today's aAfrican facial features.

You'll never guess who this actress is.

When I first saw the picture, I thought it was Cleopatra.....

Now there was a face for the ages. Taylor is probably one of the most stunning creatures to walk the face of the earth. Her portrayal of Maggie the cat is pure sexual frustration. She is enough to turn this gay boy hetro!! Ok a little off topic, my apologies.

Given that Cleopatra was actually of Greek/Macedonian descent, its likely that she was lighter skinned than the average Egyptian of the time....but that also is a matter of speculation.

.
Yea of coarse, the hunter gatherers of prehistory Europe were black, white color skin didn't come until relatively recently, when agricultural societies from the middle-east and the Caucus's started to dominate.... But that was still well before Nefertiti's time.

Somebody on Twitter is an idiot? No way!!!

FFS, there's a bust of Nefertiti that was made while she was alive. It depicts her skin tone and facial features. Sure, it's possible that 3300 years ago some honkey cooked the bust up just to shame black folk today but, personally, I think that conspiracy theory might be stretching things a bit.

In much the same way that they established the skin colour of Cheddar Man, they should be able to establish hers from her DNA

I know, right?

But I had a rather unpleasant conversation a few years back with an individual that had no idea what the Ptolemaic dynasty was, and insisted that Cleopatra could not has been as light skinned as portrayed by Elizabeth Taylor, because she believed that Cleopatra was descended purely of Nubians.

Marilyn Monroe in Life Magazine.

There are a few outfits that'll check your DNA and provide you with a report, for a price, regarding where your 'tree' originated from. Ancestry.com is one, all reports I have heard begin in Africa.

I'm pretty damn certain that the Egyptians who made that bust said, "Hey Rahm, let's **** with the 21st century folks and make her kinda white. It'll be a hoot. WTF. She's dead anyway, and get a load of those eyebrows. Old Nef would **** a brick if she could see 'em."

We have her DNA. So we know how dark she was. And yes Egyptians are often of that colouring.

Looks like some PCW's out there have found something else to be poutraged about. And look all the folks that fell for it. LOL

Her features don't seem to suggest as much. Color of skin....I don't know. From what I have seen and heard, they frowned on sun exposure, as did most royals. Could be as simple as that.
Of course we could go off and running with some snide remarks and gotchas.

There were 17 Cleopatras. All were descended in part from Macedonians, specifically Alexander who married (among his many other political alliances) a Pharoah's niece. By the time Caesar arrived in Egypt, 14 generations has passed, with only one man's genes from Macedonia in the mix.

Mummy DNA analysis show most were light skinned, only one Nubian. We know the Nubians conquered Egypt and ruled for 120 years, but then they were overthrown, and Egypt ruled the Nubians for 360 years.

Your dating is reversed. The British DNA analysis was from remains post dating Nefertiti. Hunter gatherers in most of Europe from the same period had much lighter skin tones, with few exceptions. This is what most startled the researchers in Britain.

When we finally mature to get past the recent (historically) theories of race, a European imperialist colonialist concept invented to give colonialism justification, we will realize skin pigmentation has little to do with the differentiations for mankind. This is the reason for the OP being overly simplistic and pure nonsense.

You do realize that the British islands hunter gatherers are most likely a remnant of past hunter gatherers from Mainland Europe.... there were certainly White skinned hunter gatherers, because they fulfilled a opertunity niche in the environment before the land could start to be cultivated for agriculture(because it took many years for agriculture to be able to adapt to Europe)... but before them, the hunter gatherers were indeed black. White skin is often contributed as a adaptation to agriculture and climate, due to low vitamin D foods and low sunlight radiation.

The waving in of agriculutral people of the Causcuses... most likely had hunter gatherers on the edges of their societies move in before they fully did.

And this has nothing to do with European colonization or justification for anything lol
