Trump skeptical of using foreign spies to collect intel on hostile countries, sources say

President Donald Trump has privately and repeatedly expressed opposition to the use of foreign intelligence from covert sources, including overseas spies who provide the US government with crucial information about hostile countries, according to multiple senior officials who served under Trump.

Trump has privately said that foreign spies can damage relations with their host countries and undermine his personal relationships with their leaders, the sources said. The President "believes we shouldn't be doing that to each other," one former Trump administration official told CNN.

In addition to his fear such foreign intelligence sources will damage his relationship with foreign leaders, Trump has expressed doubts about the credibility of the information they provide. Another former senior intelligence official told CNN that Trump "believes they're people who are selling out their country."

I almost don't know what to say about this. At first I thought it was a joke. When foreigners come to the United States and work hard to become an American citizen, they must swear an allegiance to this country. They hold up their hands in front of a judge and take the Oath of Allegiance.

The last sentence of the Oath of Allegiance says, "Where and if lawfully required, I further commit myself to defend the Constitution and laws of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, either by military, noncombatant, or civilian service. This I do solemnly swear, so help me God."

Since we are asking immigrants coming to the U.S. to defend this country against foreign and domestic enemies, shouldn't we expect our own president to do as much? This is getting seriously dangerous.

You can relax it's from CNN and an anonymous source. So its fake news. How can you even trust a network that lied to you about Russian Collusion for over two years. The TDS must be strong in you.

I believe it 100% and you don't. That's just how things work. You won't convince me otherwise just as I have no need to convince you otherwise. You're inside the Trump swamp right along with all the other traitors to this country. I am not. I am a patriot that will fight for our democracy.

It's entirely appropriate to take this article with a grain of salt, but if anonymous sources revealed themselves they would be fired. This idea that every source has to reveal themselves is ludicrous. And you are using the strict definition of Collusion to benefit your argument. It's true Mueller could not find evidence proving the crime of conspiracy, but that doesn't mean Trump didn't collude in the general and non-criminal sense, and there is a lot of evidence in the Mueller report which revealed this occurred. And there is substantial evidence proving Trump committed the crime of obstruction.

By the way, just out of curiosity, did you ever read the Mueller report?

That's a tired and worn out line of crap. Why do you try so hard to put Americans in danger......comrade

Trump has given out national security intelligence in the past, a number of times. Plain and simple, he can't be trusted. He may have been complicit in putting this Kremlin inside guy in danger. We don't know what went on when he met in private with Putin, no other American official present, and then had the transcript destroyed. He has meetings or plans them to do great things quickly then says "These things take time" or "I decided it would have been the wrong thing to do", as if no one could have known beforehand. The man is not right in the head. Not fit for the job. Of the 4 or 5 people that know the whereabouts of the spy we pulled from Russia, what are they going to do when/if Trump says "Show me on Google where you put this guy."??? You might as well copy Putin on that answer. He's not just a Russian asset, he's totally "loose lips" with whatever and whoever.

Finally, President of the United States of America is displaying a knowledge of historical precedent.

Ref: ‘Gentlemen don’t read each other’s mail.’ Henry Stimson, Secretary of State, 1929

Trump once again demonstrates he is completely ignorant of how intel works, and further, his ego prevents him from taking advice from anyone. This would be an admission that someone knew something he did not, and that is simply unacceptable.

Guess Henry was no gentleman then either because he was reading Japan's diplomatic mail before the US's entry into WWII.

We don't need foreign spies. American spies are better than foreign spies. We have the best spies. Nobody spies like us. (using my best Trump voice.)

Actually he can completely ignore your BS for the simple reason that you never attack fellow Trumpists for using anonymous sources. (Nevermind that media couldn't function without them because DUH)

Trump not only means "America first" he obviously means "America alone".

Don't forget to do the hand thing.

Yes. I bet you rely on reliable sources and are still looking for Obama's secret Kenyan birth certificate and think Trump U is better than Harvard too.

That's why Trump was laughed at by the international community at the United Nations.

You and Trump suffer from the same condition -- the inability to accept inconvenient facts and summarily dismiss anything that you don't like as "fake news." You may recall that Trump dismissed good job reports under Obama as"“fake" too. And a broad swath of conservatives, having predicted that Obama-era policies would produce runaway inflation, spent years insisting that official numbers showing low inflation were wrong. It really is a problem on the right -- accepting reality.

It is in keeping with Trump’s lack of knowledge of the wider world. His views both seem to align with and appeal to the fictional Archie Bunker, who Trump channels almost perfectly.

If there was a globe in his office, he’s be shocked to learn that the earth is round, and that the US is not in the center of it.

He actually said, "did you know that Abraham Lincoln was a Republican?"

Yes! I had actually forgotten that one!

I have been saying that Trump thinks The Constitution is an apartment house on the Upper West Side.

He doesn't trust people who keep notes. People who take measures to actually keep their facts straight are not credible to him.

So actually, the problem is that they're a threat to him since he is so dedicated to remaining ignorant, but he can't express that, so he says it is they who are not credible.

I think it is also because of his penchant for living in the present.

He has no vision for the future, beyond advancing his own interest, or just getting away with it. In the past, he tossed his problems over his shoulder to guys like Michael Cohen. And he never looks back. His world is the moment. He says whatever he thinks will get him through. His reality is whatever comes out of his mouth at the moment. Truth means nothing. What’s false yesterday, doesn’t matter today. That’s his reality. That and how he thinks he looks on TV and how much attention he is getting.

He does not like having to be responsible. He has never answered to anyone in his life, much less voters. He’s not used to press that remembers what he says, and asks hard questions.

He is afraid of the record.

I think he has a penchant for living in the past, specifically the 1970s. At his rallies he talks about crime ridden minority ghettos, which largely don't exist any longer and crime is at near 40 year lows.

Ask yourself, What Would Putin Do (WWPD)? Given the chance would Putin pull all US spies out of Russia? You damn skippy he would! All Trump's authoritarian role models would love to pull US spies out of their realms of influence.

Nobody knows less about intelligence that Donald Trump.

I disagree. Trump is far more cunning and calculating than we give him credit for. What appears at first glance to be crazy town is actually Trump deliberately and methodically controlling the narrative. While normal people are going "Wait ... What?" Trump has got their focus off of whatever it was on before. It doesn't matter how crazy or even verifiably false it is, if it gets you off what you were thinking and talking about before, it works.

Doubt this?

How many GOP primary candidates were there in 2016? How many can you name? Can you recall any specific issue positions any of them took? Most people can't.

But if I mention Gold Star Family, disabled reporter, the Cruz family and the JFK assassination, and Mexico paying for 'something' I bet most people will have something come to mind.

Why? Because Trump controls the narrative. This is no accident. This is not Peter Sellers bumbling through "Being There." This is Trump using the MSM and social media to keep the focus where he wants it.
