states with highest violent crime

ok, I read this in an atlas that was probably not brand new (library copy)

but I was reading some stats on different states and thought to myself, "Which states have the highest violent crime rate?"

I made a guess: New York

but NY was 2nd

so then I guessed again: Florida

I was right on the money. I have never been to FL so I have no idea why I chose that state except that it kind of made sense.. being surrounded by the ocean which brings in all kinds of stuff.. laugh..

Anyway, it was also interesting to see that Nebraska had the lowest level of employment.. a lot of Dem-run states (NE is not one) were also low in employment.

We should all look @ atlases every now and then.. very interesting.

The 2019 crime statistics show that when it comes to per capita crime rates Alaska is the worst followed by New Mexico, Nevada; then Tennessee. Louisiana. Arkansas, Alabama and Alabama and Missouri. There is something strange about Florida that escapes me. Maybe its the weather that attracts so many psychos. Or maybe its because its cheap and easy to live in so it attracts the detritus of society. Or maybe its just because there are a ton of very, very strange people there for whatever reason. Maybe there is no reason at all. Maybe the place is just doomed to be a haven for bizarre behavior.

Looking at the safest states map in #3, it seems that they correlate much more closely to geography than to politics or ethnicity, at least for the 48 contiguous states. Only 1 of the 15 states below the Mason-Dixon line (Mississippi) is in the lower half of the rankings, while only 6 of the 33 states north of the line are in the upper half of the rankings. (California and Nevada straddle the line, but most of the population in both those states is in the south, so I grouped them with the southern states.)

Patrick Moynihan once noticed a similar correlation between geography and high school test scores and quipped that instead of spending more money on schools, southern states should move closer to Canada if they wanted to improve scores. Maybe in the case of safety, the way to improve things is not to get closer to Canada, but farther away from Mexico, which is an extremely unsafe place even by the unsafest states' standards.

Here in California, the powers-that-be often reduce serious charges to lesser charges.

In that way, they can say with a straight face (as they have done here in Los Angeles) that there is now less violent crime than there was in the 1950s! I kid you not. They think that people are stupid enough to believe such nonsense, and maybe they are.

Or because almost everything is a felony that is a misdemeanor in other states, and with it only 6 jurors except in 1st degree felony cases makes trials and convictions easier. Added to this is the extremely high number of seniors that attracts predators.
