Crimea consistently, in large numbers, voted during Ukrainian elections for the "Russian candidate" (60+%). He is also correct that most people speak and spoke Russian, which was part of the whole problem in 2014 when the new Kiev government removed the ability for regions to allow Russian to be an official second language. Add to that, the threat of going back on the Ukraine-Russia agreement on Sevastopol and well that was enough reason for rebellion/invasion.

So for once in his sorry life.. he is actually somewhat correct that Crimea spoke/speaks mostly Russian. Now is that a reason to call it Russian.. no, but the voting patterns might be. If there was held a real referendum, free and fair, then there is/was a very very good chance of them voting to leave Ukraine.

Historically Crimea has NOT been Ukrainian.. in fact one could argue that Ukraine or those areas are the traditional enemies. Hell one could also argue that Italy has more right to Crimea than Ukraine, since the old Italian state of Genoa held part of the area for centuries.

There are currently 89 Tartars and Ukrainians in Russian prisons for protesting the illegal Russian takeover of Crimea . All churches in Crimea except the Russian Orthodox Church have been declared foreign agents. Crimea used to be a tourist mecca. Now it's a giant military base. The indigenous Tartar people (Muslim) are constantly persecuted (so they will voluntarily go into exile on mainland Ukraine).
