Sydney Aiello, who survived the 2018 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, has died from suicide, people close to the family told CNN. Her mother, Cara, told CNN affiliate WFOR that Aiello suffered from survivor's guilt after one of the deadliest mass shootings in modern US history and had recently been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. Aiello, a student at Florida Atlantic University, died Sunday. Her funeral was Friday in Davie, Florida. Aiello had been on campus the day of the mass attack but was not in the building where the shootings took place, her mother said, according to WFOR. Aiello, a cheerleader in high school, graduated just months after a troubled teen gunned down 14 students and three teachers there.

In the weeks after the carnage, grieving students launched a nationwide movement calling for public policy changes that would prevent a similar tragedy. Gun safety advocates credit those efforts for state legislation enacted last year across the country, including 67 new gun laws approved by both Republican and Democratic legislators in 26 states and Washington, DC, according to a year-end report by the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

Sydney died of a gunshot wound to the head. One more victim of the Parkland shooter. This is not intended as a political or anti-gun thread, so let's please maintain our composure and respect her memory.

It's a damn shame the girl killed herself; however, I'm not one who has much to say about how folks kill themselves. If they can't do it "this" way, assuming they're committed to doing it, they'll do so "that" way, and there's no dearth of ways to commit suicide.

To the extent the girl killed herself as a result of unresolve angst deriving from her having been part of the Parkland shooting event, well, that's a different matter. There's nothing right about a national "landscape," culture that in any way abets there being more catalysts to suicide and/or abets there being more (rather than fewer) and more accessible means by which one can commit suicide.

All that notwithstanding, God rest her soul and may perpetual light shine upon her.

Then why post it in the gun control forum?

Horrible news. That poor girl.

She committed suicide by gun. Forget already? And as I stated in the OP, another victim of the Parkland shooter.

Does everything in this forum have to be a battle and contentious?

Thoughts and prayers.

I don't know how to respond with rage atthose that enable these things so I'll not comment other than to say that this story really bothers me.

Who enables these things?

She wasn't in the building although traumatic events affect everyone differently. When a parent loses their child, sometimes they never recover.

We do not know what was going on with this girl. For all, we know she could have been going through a lot of other personal issues unrelated to the shooting.

Okay.. this is what pisses me off.

the Parkland shooter had a long history of mental health problems.. and did not get the help he needed.... which resulted in the death of those children.

this poor girl.. also suffered mental health problems obviously.. and probably did not get the mental health treatment SHE needed. which resulted in a preventable death.

and yet what is the tagline here? the gun...

WHEN are people going to start dealing with the REAL issue here.. instead of blaming firearms? Huh? When will YOU!.

PTSD of that magnitude must be really hard to reckon with. Not only are so many familiar faces gone from your life, but they were taken brutally, you were there when it happened, and you didn't die with them. As if being a teenager isn't rough enough, I can't imagine adding that to it.

I'm sad that she's gone and I don't blame her.

In all likelihood. we need to blame those that took the focus off the real problem.. mental health.. and onto firearms.

You need to stop politicizing this RIP thread. Don't drag me into your agenda. I am commenting on a human being, not politics.

I am not politicizing it.. this is about human beings and human life. This is a health issue.

You're retaliating against a minor statement earlier that linked the suicide to guns, which is why you're replying to every person in this thread (including me) to counter it with the mental health argument. You need to stop subverting this thread's purpose. RIP threads are for memorials or bereavement. Read the rules.

Thoughts and prayers.

And you wonder why Hillary called you guys deplorables. Take your gun, stick it underneath your chin, and pull the trigger. That's the only way that gun will ever kill a bad guy.

that's ****ing awful. i hate suicide. rest in peace.

The purpose of a gun control forum is to talk about gun control. As you claim this is not a "political or anti-gun thread". But yet instead of putting it in the breaking news forum section, health care forum section or some other forum section you put it in the gun control forum section. Implying you are trying to use her death to push for gun control while at the same time trying to use the RIP tag to try to stop any discussion on gun control.
