McConnell on Moore: 'I believe the women,' Moore should go

By Eli Watkins
November 13, 2017

Washington -- Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell believes the allegations against Alabama Republican Senate nominee Roy Moore and that Moore should leave the race, the Kentucky Republican said Monday. "I believe the women, yes," McConnell told reporters in Kentucky. McConnell, the Senate's top Republican and a frequent target of Moore on the campaign trail, said, "I think he should step aside." Last week, The Washington Post published a bombshell report based on interviews with more than 30 people, saying Moore pursued relationships with teenage women while he was in his 30s. One woman said she was 14 years old when Moore initiated sexual contact with her.

The Post's report increased pressure on Republicans to disavow Moore, who was already controversial due in part to his history of racially-charged and homophobic commentary. In the immediate wake of the story, some Republicans, like Arizona Sen. John McCain, said the report was enough for them to call for Moore to drop out of the race. Many Republicans, like McConnell, said Moore should step aside from the race if the allegations are true. McConnell's comments on Monday brought his position a step further, saying he believed the allegations and that Moore should go. McConnell on Monday said the party is looking to see if a write-in option could be successful. Documents filed to the Federal Elections Commission on Friday showed the National Republican Senatorial Committee -- one of the party's main campaign arms -- cut its fundraising ties with Moore.

Moore is a lame duck even before the election. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wants him gone and the GOP has shut down all campaign funding to Moore.

Mitch McConnell has no moral compass. He'll say he believes anything that will help him keep the GOP majority.

It's kind of nice that he doesn't think that a pedophile would be an asset to the senate. It puts him miles ahead of the Alabama state Republican Party.

Even a broken clock is correct twice a day.

Orrin Hatch just backed up Mitch.

I wonder if the establishment in Washington will have any effect in Alabama. If it does, it might be the opposite of what was intended. McConnell may be trying to insulate other GOP candidates form the fall out from Moore's candidacy.

Would be nice if that were the reason. But Mitch is a little late. It's been a week plus. New polls show Moore fading. If McConnell believes the downward path is not reversible, which he probably does believe, the only course is to get Moore out. It may be a desperate choice. Moore will get votes no matter what happens and every vote he gets with Strange on the ticket in his place might as well be a vote for Jones, the Democrat.

I suspect that is true and you are correct. But in this case I give him some credit for doing the right thing - even though his motivation is most likely to save his own sorry ass as Majority Leader.

Puhlleeeeze. These folks are exactly like the children who go to a museum and touch **** simply because there is a sign there saying "Please Do Not Touch". If anything, this will make them double down yet again.

McConnell continues to play his 'long game' ahead of his difficult 2020 and 2022 Senate maps. The longer Cruz waits to disavow Moore, the Moore jeopardy he's in next year ...

Regardless of his reasoning, he gets credit for this. It makes the other side look petty when you attack the other side for doing the right thing for the "wrong" reasons.

Is this supposed to be a surprise? He tried to get rid of him in the primary, and offered no support when Moore won. As I've already said before this came out, McConnell would prefer that a Democrat win before Moore. He's a conservative, and that's a threat to McConnell's power, unlike a Democrat.

McConnell is not a "real conservative" like Donald Trump, amirite?

It is obvious when you use a word like pedophile, that you don't know what it means.

Teenagers are not prepubescent children.

Wow, I have a lot of power if I can make my whole, "other side" look petty.

I stand by what I said. McConnell doesn't give a hoot about "right" or "wrong".

Here's a nit. Pick it.

Jesus, is that the BEST defense Cons can come up with? Moore doesn't fit the definition of "pedophile" - by one year?

You think a 13 year old is pre-pubescent?

Are you joking? Neither of them are.

Oh, I know Trump is no conservative. But millions of Republicans voted for him in the primaries and then the general election...all while complaining that they hate "RINO's". Yet, they voted for the biggest "RINO" of them all.

What's the point? That is normal. Or, do you think you should only vote for the person you wanted in the primaries, and not vote for anyone else? Your only other choice is to vote for the other candidate that doesn't represent you at all.

Some are, yes. Why?

Do you have a point aside from the nitpicking Thelion noted? Certainly you're not the only person who knows the terms hebephilia or ephebophilia, but you're also aware pedophilia is popular slang for any attraction for those under 18.

So, again...do you have a point besides nitpicking?

Just remember, kids: 15 women came out against Trump for sexual assault and harassment, and after the Access Hollywood tape the GOP abandoned him en masse. Until he won a month later.

It is not nitpicking to point out that saying somebody is a pedophile is saying they like little kids.

Pedophilia is not slang for anything to anybody that is being honest when speaking about this subject.

If that were true, he'd be doing everything he could to make sure Moore gets elected to maintain that majority. The loss of what should be an extremely safe GOP senate seat really changes the 2018 landscape, giving Democrats a solid shot at retaking a majority and blockading their regressive agenda.
