Baseball is my favorite sport, but the NCAA men's basketball tournament is my favorite event on the sports calendar. This may be because its win-or-go-home single elimination format reminds me of the old one-class Indiana high school tournament I grew up with. (Indiana's move to a multi-class tournament was, IMHO, a terrible thing, but that's a topic for another day.)

So now, with the Super Bowl in the rear view mirror and spring training still ahead of us, let's indulge in some bracketology and start getting ready for the tournament. Right now I think Villanova, Virginia and Purdue look like firm #1 seeds, but I have no idea who should be the fourth #1.

If the season ended today I’d say Xavier takes the 4th #1. They’ve got a very strong resume with a head to head win against Cincinnati who is also up near that level.

Seems reasonable. I've always liked Xavier; their teams always play hard.

I don't follow college basketball until the March Madness Tourney. But I do like the Tourney.

Anyway I am glad to see a few teams in the Big East still doing good after the conference was gutted years ago.

I haven't heard much this season, is Duke's Grayson Allen behaving?

Duke will win because they are the most talented team and Coach K will get the kids playing well during March.

When the kids start embracing Coach K's teaching, they will win it all.

I doubt it. 24 games in and they still can’t guard. Their D hasn’t even improved much. And with Grayson struggling hard lately, even their offense has suffered a bit. Reminds me more of their 2012 or 2014 teams that were upset in the 1st round than their 2015 version.

I confess to bias in this call, but to me this year's Virginia team has a lot of old fashioned virtues that just might prevail.

[h=1]Opportunity knocks for Bubble Watch teams this weekend[/h]The benefit of playing in a major conference is the amount of résumé-boosting opportunities provided. Bubble Watch teams like Alabama and Virginia Tech should not squander their chances.

Not so long ago I confidently named Villanova, Virgina and Purdue as solid #1 seeds. Since then all three lost. Gotta love college basketball.

Zags win at St. Mary’s. Probably going to move to #8 on Monday. Maybe this is our year.

Pretty disappointed Gonzaga wasn't in the top 16. I think our resume, with our top wins is better than Oklahoma or Arizona. But hopefully at least the Zags would have been just outside their rankings.

I think the Zags will get there.

[h=1]Bracketology: Night of upsets reshape the bracket[/h]Thursday saw four ranked teams get upset by unranked opponents. For Purdue, the loss could cost them a No. 1 seed.

[h=1]Bubble Watch: Struggling to survive in a rugged Big 12[/h]In a league as competitive as the Big 12, opportunities abound for quality wins. The problem, as Texas and Oklahoma are learning in recent weeks, is winning those games. Will the Longhorns or Sooners end their losing streaks this weekend?
