Doomsday Clock moves closest to midnight in 73-year history | South China Morning Post

Symbolic countdown to global disaster ticks forward 20 seconds in view of ‘existential danger’ from nuclear war and climate change
Group of former world leaders calls for cooperation to ‘pull humanity back from the brink’

The keepers of the Doomsday Clock on Thursday moved the symbolic countdown to global disaster to the closest point to midnight in its 73-year history, citing “existential danger” from nuclear war and climate change.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, which was founded after the creation of the atomic bomb amid World War II and focuses on the greatest threats to human survival, said it moved the clock from two minutes to midnight to 100 seconds to midnight – a 20-second advance.

The BAS have always been overly alarmists regarding the Doomsday Clock.

So this is what life must have been like at the height of the Cold War, when one loose decision could have resulted in the annihilation of humankind.

God help us all.

I'm not worried. We could wipe out 99% of all humanity and mankind would still have 77,000,000 bodies roaming around eating, sleeping and screwing.

The Democratic Party are the Prophets of Doom. According to them, all human life on earth was destroyed half a century ago. They are ALWAYS proven wrong.

Sorry, that was tame by comparison.......

“Mister, we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again.........”

THX God for Mutually Assured Destruction.

When civil people are at the helm, MAD works. With hotheads, though...

well, at least i got to find out how the Dark Tower series ended before self congratulatory stupid people **** everything up. Thankee, Sai.

The BAS have always been overly alarmists regarding the Doomsday Clock.

Doomsayers are pretty much always in it for the attention. Alarmists alarm to get people panicked to do things they want.

I don't know who actually takes the "Doomsday Clock" seriously, especially when they moved it closer to midnight today than they did during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

That show stunted the Hollywood liberals. The purpose of the show, of course, is to insult and ridicule conservative white men as ignorant racists. That has been the goal of Hollywood for over half a century. They added Christians to that list about 3 decades ago.

What stunned them is that polls show that an overwhelming majority of Americans agreed with Archie.

Good, humans are a scrounge to the earth

"'Cause I'm praying for rain
And I'm praying for tidal waves
I wanna see the ground give way
I wanna watch it all go down
Mom please flush it all away
I wanna see it go right in and down
I wanna watch it go right in
Watch you flush it all away"

What relevancy does the doomsday clock have to the people of Pompey or Native Americans in the the 17th and 18th century? Seems like it is well past midnight for them.

The proliferation of nukes is even scarier. The NORKS' nuke testing site is likely no longer workable due to unstable geology & its proximity to China. If they want to test their H-bomb, they would need to set it off outside the atmosphere. The electromagnetic pulse etc. would be destructive enough to our assets in the Pacific that that could start a war.

India & Pakistan are relatively unstable & are still fighting over Kashmir. Both have nukes & we have no idea how safe their safeguards are. And they have more than their share of religious looniies

The list goes on. Israel has nukes & wants to do in Iran before they have the bomb. We sold them KC-135s for mid-air refueling, so their fighter-bombers can handle the round trip.

Feeling safe yet?

All this so that a few hotheaded boys can take a little more control over a fraction of a blue dot in space.

Yes..

It's also the cure for Global Warming so I fail to see what all the fuss is about.

In some people's minds it would be a cure. I have a feeling they might be in for a big surprise if it isn't.

The leading scientists who set it do. You, of course, are better informed, and don't.

You're so well informed, you don't even know how it works - how it's not changed in real time to specific events generally, and the Cuban Missile Crisis was over before they could reset it, but rather they set it twice a year to larger threat directions.

Maybe you could read some of the mistake they are making you know better about by reading their statement, linked below.

Humanity continues to face two simultaneous existential dangers—nuclear war and climate change—that are compounded by a threat multiplier, cyber-enabled information warfare, that undercuts society’s ability to respond. The international security situation is dire, not just because these threats exist, but because world leaders have allowed the international political infrastructure for managing them to erode.

The leading scientists who set it do.

No kidding. The people who promulgate it take it seriously. So?

I love the "leading scientists" thing, as though it makes it so that what they do can't be argued with. (And the assumption that they are "leading scientists" in the first place.)

but rather they set it twice a year

No, they don't. They set it as events warrant, in their estimation. Even your own link shows this.
