We live in a "FIAT" currency Nation/world and that currency is supported by FAITH/CONFIDENCE. Government numbers are "crunched/manipulated" to inspire CONFIDENCE so that the economy doesn't crash. A good example is Obama's bragging about creating 10 million jobs. He neglected to mention that the 10 million jobs were part time and replaced full time jobs at about half the money because they were minimum wage jobs without benefits. Disappear a lot of people out of the workforce and unemployment numbers look rosier. These references are made to inspire CONFIDENCE to support the economy/FIAT currency. Take note that there are no actual economic improvements to inspire CONFIDENCE.
