Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl pleads guilty to desertion - CNNPolitics

Fort Bragg, North Carolina (CNN)Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl pleaded guilty to desertion and misbehavior before the enemy via his attorney Monday.

Bergdahl, 31, was charged after he disappeared from his base in Afghanistan in June 2009 and was held in captivity by the Taliban until May 2014.

A judge said Bergdhal's maximum possible punishment would be life in prison, but he has not been sentenced yet.

Obama's favorite military hero is headed for prison.

How many soldiers did we lose and terrorists did we give away to save this traitor?

An Obama bashing thread from you. In other news, the sun will set in the west tonight.

I listened to the whole Serial series of podcasts about the Bergdahl case. He came across as psychologically unsuited for front-line service and, according to the Army Sanity Board, suffers from severe mental illness, but nevertheless responsible for his actions. Whether or not he deserves a long prison sentence after having suffered torture and 5 years in captivity at the hands of the Taliban is another matter. I suspect he's been punished enough for his really poor decisions. I don't believe there's any evidence that anyone was killed or injured as a direct result of being involved in the search for Bergdahl.

Has it not dawned upon you that Obama is no longer in office?

That's the downside of controlling all three branches of government. There's nobody relevant to bash.

The US Coast Guard turned him out after 26 days! But the Army needs warm bodies......

This guys an insult to men & women wearing the uniform, everywhere. No other way around it!

But he's still one of ours, we bring ours back and take care of them here. That's the difference between us and them!

I'm not sure what Obama did wrong on this issue. The Army would have proceeded to send teams out to look for him and I think (not sure of policy) our govt would have tried to get a prisoner back. It's up to us to charge him as needed, not allow the enemy to keep him and use him as leverage.

And now hopefully he'll get the punishment he deserves.

If the Army really did send an unfit man to the front lines, I hope that there is much learned from this harsh lesson where men lost their lives searching.

Not really. Obots spent 8 years blaming and bashing Bush. Now only 8 months out of office, these same people demand Obama be free of criticism. Sorry, that's not going to happen. Hell, there are liberals here still bashing Reagan. So no matter how hard you guys try, Obama wont be getting his safe space any time soon.

Maybe I shouldn't, but I feel bad for the guy. Not sure what he deserves, but I hope he doesn't get life.

IMO he should be locked in some facility for life. Too bad it will cost us more taxpayer $.

20/20 hindsight is never a good thing. While there were questions about Bergdahl's actions, we didn't know for sure until now and had no way then of knowing if he had in fact deserted.

His claim is that he intended to walk 18 miles to the next base to complain about chain of command at his base, which is pretty damn stupid given the territory. But I'm no military lawyer so I have no idea what rises to the level of desertion vs whatever he's saying he was trying to do (AWOL for a cause or...?)

Wow, that never stopped you all from bashing George W Bush for eight years after he left office. No one made President Barack H Obama go into the Rose Garden with Bergdahl's parents. President Obama traded five high ranking Taliban for one US Army deserter. He dit that on his own. Therefore, he bears the criticism now as his "hero" Bowe Bergdahl pleads guilty to desertion.

I also listened to that entire series. However, I disagree. I think that he should rot in military prison. It is never acceptable to walk away from your unit in a war zone. While you can claim there is no evidence that anyone was killed or injured as a DIRECT result of the search, you certainly cannot claim that a whole lot of military assets were used trying to find him. In addition, five high level detainees were turned over to get him returned. The five year of torture that he endured? Too bad, so sad! I guess maybe you shouldn't have went off to great the enemy.

of course it is in our nation's interest to further incarcerate someone having severe mental health issues, despite that he was a taliban prisoner for years already

True, but we did know for a fact what the animals we released in exchange had done. Compare the Obama admin response to Bergdahl to the numerous other American hostages taken and held around the world in that same time. There is a definite disparity in response and he picked the wrong one to make a priority.

Of course you do not see what President Obama did wrong on this issue. Let me clue you in...

And yet, the facts surrounding his disappearance were not known then. Again: did Obama's actions to get him released differ from general policy? I know that it is not black and white when dealing with terrorist demands.

The ability to use him for leverage still remained as long as he was in enemy hands.
