    spirit?

An uncle lived with my parents and siblings.

He came down with cancer and during the last three weeks of his life he was placed in a facility for those folks whose life is expected to shortly end (don't recall what name is).

Three days after his passing when I was starting to wake up, I heard footsteps in the hallway that sounded like his footsteps. The family dog that was with me made a low growling sound when I heard (or thought I heard) his footsteps.

Am wondering, could it have been his spirit coming home? If so, where did the spirit go? Or was I just imaging all this?
But if so, what caused the dog to growl?

The Bible speaks of the life-force as being our spirit so no, I don't think it was his spirit you heard...

"Then the dust returns to the earth, just as it was, and the spirit returns to the true God who gave it." Ecclesiastes 12:7

"When you hide your face, they are disturbed. If you take away their spirit, they die and return to the dust." Psalm 104:29
"For whoever becomes ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of man will also be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. Mark 8:38

    He's Jesus 2.0

On a serious note, according to Catholics, there are no ghosts, only demons masquerading as such.

There is zero concrete evidence for the existence of any kind of “spirit” or any ability for any element of a person continuing after death to directly interact with us. There is loads of evidence of people dreaming or imagining such things, especially shortly after the death of someone close to them. On that basis, there is no valid reason to simply presume the first explanation over the second for any unexplained experience.

That is what the Bible tells us...we are warned to stay far away from "anyone who employs divination, anyone practicing magic, anyone who looks for omens, a sorcerer, anyone binding others with a spell, anyone who consults a spirit medium or a fortune-teller, or anyone who inquires of the dead." Deuteronomy 18:10-12

    Define concrete?

There's loads of video evidence of the paranormal.

    Magic?

Like.....turning a staff into a serpent? Waving arms and parting seas? Deflecting arrows?

How does one discern the difference between sorcery and divinity?

No, there is video of unexplained phenomena (much of which could be explained by entirely mundane means).

I’m thinking of a much more formal scientific approach, with a well-defined hypothesis for what a “spirit” actually is and therefore what measurable effects it would have to form the basis for experimentation to detect those specific effects. The continued failure of any proponent to even try to establish a formal hypothesis is the main blocker in this area.

Wasn't there a study at one point about 47 grams, or something? Weight different at point of death. I don't know if it was ever studied further, or debunked.

My wife watches a bunch of ghost hunter shows. In a skeptic, myself. However, I've seen some stuff on some of those shows that defy explanation. Disembodied forms caught on security cameras, carts and tables moving caught by security cameras in hospitals, schools, etc.

    Re: spirit?

    Nevermind.

Some dude in mass did in like, 1900 or so, only did 6 bodies, weighted at time of death, and had 1 lose weight. 22 grams. I call....methane release.

Also, time of death in 1907 =/= time of death today.

    Shoddy science.
