You got evidence of that? The article offers no real evidence, and other live events without politics are not doing well in the ratings either(see for example professional wrestling). The painfully idiotic "proof" the source used is a golf game with 3 of the biggest name sports figures in the world playing having good ratings, like it has to be the politics and not the name recognition...
I don't know about wrestling, but MLS is up, NWSL is up, NASCAR is up, golf is up, WNBA is up, UFC is up...

NASCAR? Banned the confederate flag NASCAR? I think I would put that as a data point against the conclusion of the article. WNBA? Walking off the court during the anthem WNBA? Seems to argue against the point of the article.
Did not know about those(none of those sports interest me) but more than willing to take your word for it as you have never come off as particularly dishonest. However, I think with NASCAR and WNBA being up, my original point holds, that there are other explanations more likely than the protests for declined ratings. Now if you will excuse me, hockey is on(and they are doing the anthem protests, but I don't care one way or another), and it is the only really great spectator sport.
Are they? I heard the opposite, but I don't follow hockey.

Regardless of how one feels about the protests I don't understand this point. The basketball game I watched yesterday was still a basketball game, not fundamentally different than any other game I've watched over the years despite whatever the players did before it tipped off.

You said you didn't understand why people would want to watch a bunch of idiots protesting something, and that reasoning doesn't track with me since the actual product has remained basically the same.

Stats illustrate (WaPo)... Blacks killed by cops is lower than Whites killed by cops.
And 75,000 plus dead Blacks at the hands of other Blacks every decade... doesn’t register.
They should look at the real problem. plus, defunding the cops will make matters worse, not better.

I did read the article, that is how I know it did not back up their claim with actual evidence. I know that evidence is not something you need nor desire for things you believe, but most of us actually prefer facts and evidence.
