Stadium sponsor FedEx asks Redskins to change nickname

What does this have to do with the 1st amendment? This is the free market at work.

You obviously didn't read post #4, where I point out the Supreme Court declared Section 2(a) of the Lanham Act (a.k.a the "disparagement clause") to be unconstitutional. In violation of the First Amendment.

See: Matal v. Tam, 582 U.S. ___ (2017)

The name change is already pretty much a done deal. It's a business decision.

Yeah...even if that's all this was, I'd call that change. I'll save you the time, you can't debate that, by dictionary definition that would be change.

But, of course, that's not an accurate description of what's happening. That's just the distorted perception of a guy scared of change. ;) It would take more than that to get the widespread support, or at least widespread indifference, that making this change would require. It's been talked about for years. That it's coming to a head now simply indicates that a big enough segment of society is ready for it to come to a head. It was always going to happen, that's what you didn't realize back when these complaints were first made. You can't stop change.

No, I know full well that it's been talked about. Which is why I know that no one largely cared for the name being what it was.

Were it not for the social climate we're in now, we'd probably still be looking at this with the same glazed expression of indifference. Because it was never proven to be a problem for anyone, other then the overly privileged people who tend to keep championing this kind of crap.

Though I'm also not scared of change. So it's not like you haven't been wrong several times already with trying to paint me in some negative light.
As it was with statues being torn down. This is most likely going to lead to even worse events in the near future.

Because much like this statue incident. It's only going to open other doors, for people to demand changes, or even attempt to force them. For teams that don't touch on the boundary of race.

True. Some people are already proposing to ban the names the “Brooklyn Hebrews,” the “Arkansas Inbreds,” or the “Mississippi Lynchers.” Where will it end?

Yet the left will allow the Pennsylvanian Pedos, or the Rockford Rapist to stay unchanged... Pretty much explains their current predilections.

Spare me the stupidity of this kind of argument.

We have people getting beaten/killed over simple statues. So I wouldn't put it passed one of these idiots to just set a highs cools field house, or bleachers on fire and it ends up killing someone when the whole school burns.

Dan Snyder purchased the team in 1999.

Since then the won/loss record is 142-193-1.

Eight head coaches.

There was a time that there was a waiting list for season tickets,; now not so much.

Many home games have a significant amount of ‘away’ fans,

If the team were more relevant, this might be a larger issue........

We have more important issues.........

It alienates a lot of people and offensive too many yet people still defend it....

because they are racist.

There really is no other logical explanation for any support of the name Redskins as a natioanl team sport name.

hehe...no, you usually prove me right on a rather dependable basis.

As for the attempt at pouty fear mongering, I'll go ahead and agree - this will likely lead to ever worse events in the near future...for dip**** racists and social luddites that society is in the process of giving up on anyway.

Boring treatise follows:

Look, the name change things means something to those indicated by the name. It seems somewhat demeaning to them. If you don't think the issue is worth fighting over, you don't have to take their side. Other than the Fighting Irish and the Boston Celtics, (whose land wasn't stolen and people werent killed in America) we don't usually name teams after particular nationalities. There is a reason why Chief Noc-A-Homa of the Braves was found offensive by some, while the Boston Celtics aren't. No different than why we tend not to refer to grown women as "girls" these days.

We are all annoyed by political correctness at times. The right tends to forget that the left invented the term to make fun of ourselves, something we on the left often forget as well, cf. some of the college-based focus on language. When Mel Brooks and Richard Prior made "Blazing Saddles," the script obviously intended to weaken the word "nigger" by overuse. The movie probably couldn't be made today, which is sad, as perhaps overuse of the word would indeed destroy it.

Ironies: just as blacks may refer to one another with the n-word, when I hung out with some Native Americans in Colorado years ago, they referred to one another as "Skins," a word I probably couldn't use. When in the fifties my Italian father would see on TV some entertainer who he thought had changed his Italian name he would say, "He's a wop." (Think Tony Bennett, Frankie Lane, and more recently Bobby Rydell, Dion, etc.) But use of the insults generally stay within the insulted or formerly insulted group.

Quick search revealed that plenty of colleges have renamed their mascots whose names use to have something to do with Native Americans. This probably wouldn't have happened without our history of viewing them as simply more intelligent forest dwellers. No moves I am aware of at Notre Dame to get rid of the leprechaun figure with his fists raised.

Every revolution (of sorts) has its silliness. The French renamed the months after 1789, for crying out loud. They got over it. As will we.

Final word on the Redskins. They were the last NFL team to integrate. Their owner was sort of forced to do so with Bobby Mitchell the first black player. I also read (but can't confirm) that his will prohibited any money for any cause that advanced integration. His statue has been removed from RFK stadium.

So your argument is so weak. That you're just going to claim that anyone who doesn't agree with you is a racist?

Sorry to be so up front with you, but that's a rather pathetic stance to take. You'd have to prove something is racist in the first place and then you have to prove that it is actually something that should be done of the groups own accord.

So other than revealing just how desperate you are to be found correct. You have no actually argument here, or at least one that can't be argued above a 3rd grade level.

And from the studies done that actually gauge those same people. The name either has no real indication, or they find it as a positive indicator.

I find this argument for a name change has a time and place. But right now, with all of the riots and protest going on. People are basically taking their chance to rapidly point at anything they can, shout racist and expect results from doing so.

Hey, Ob, by all means, never stop being "upfront" with me, your candor is what makes you fun to talk to. I'm sure you'll appreciate receiving candor in return.

So, first of all, the attempt to misrepresent is a failure. I do not believe that anyone who disagrees with me is a racist. I believe that racists are racist, and thankfully there is enough of a societal understanding of what that means today that it's pretty much obvious in most cases. It's also a failure because I had two descriptors - I believe I said "dip**** racists" and "social luddites". That represents two groups of people, though I would agree if someone said they tend to overlap. But they are not mutually inclusive terms.

In terms of my desperation, let me clarify. I am not desperate for you to find me correct. Not at all. The point was that people who hold toxic and obsolete ideologies don't matter anymore, because they are being bulldozed by decency. It's the movement that is exploding all around you, despite your whining and complaining and demonizing and scapegoating and...well, you get the picture. It's the birthplace of "Ok, Boomer", and the designation of "Karen". It is so mainstream that the toxic ideologies of people who would seek to hold society back are already dead...y'all just don't know it yet...which is probably why you run around debate forums like chickens with your heads cut off. It's already over, bud, you lost.

So, no, I'm not desperate to be "found" correct, I know I'm already on the right side of history. You're the desperate one, and with good reason...your grasp on the world is slipping, and you will be remembered as the type of person that delayed progress. Whether or not you, personally, are a racist is something I can't assign. I don't know you, nor do I care to know you to that level. But you are most certainly a social luddite, and that is proven with every post you drop here. Until you decide to get with the program, you're basically for entertainment purposes only....except when you're serving as a cautionary tale for the next generation, and better people in your own.

As I've said on this forum enough times, time will take care of what decency will not. How you are remembered is up to you, but your impact has a shelf life...which seems to have expired, because all the things folks like you are ranting and raving about is happening anyway, and that's during a time when you have possibly the most regressive president in the history of your country at the helm no less. Imagine what's gonna happen when he's out of there. hehe... Nah, bud, no desperation required...simply patience, and gentle pushing in the right direction - something made infinitely easier when you folks are so willing to be the example of how not to be.

What about Washington, in Washington Redskins. Wasn't George Washingon a Slave owner and Slave trader?

Would work

No, now you're just appearing desperate after you've been called out one too many times.

Now you are stuck running away like the other post before. But you only can manage to talk **** over your shoulder as you do it.

You would first have to prove something, to actually be found correct. All you're capable of doing is just running your mouth and that's the saddest issue with all of this.

So just keep running away and keep screeching in desperation. Because you're not achieving anything other than making yourself seem more pathetic with every post you make.

lol...I mean, the one good thing about your running the same fail across multiple threads means I really only have to write my response once. From the other thread...

Hey, Ob...why are you trying so hard to suggest I'm running away? You ought to know by now I don't do that. Just one more thing you're wrong about. You ever get tired of being wrong Ob? Apparently not.

I didn't bring the statistics to the table, because they're well known and easily found. They're so uncontroversial that they need not be cited. If you're actually unaware of the disparity statistics in your own country, well...maybe go get yourself a little education before assuming you're smart enough to hang on a debate forum.

Seeing as you didn't actually say anything I need to refute that pertains to the topic, I'll leave you to ponder your options...though I'm sure my getting to read another petulant crybaby fail with my morning coffee tomorrow is a foregone conclusion. Zzzzzzzz.....

Never going to happen. The Supreme Court has already sided with the Washington Redskins and declared Section 2(a) of the Lanham Act (a section better known as the "disparagement clause") to be unconstitutional.

Let me guess, you are one of those ANTI First Amendment (ANTIFA) supporters, right? Everything you don't agree with must be BANNED!

Guess what? It happened.
