Pro Softball Team Quits After General Manager Tweets Anthem Brag To Trump

2021 Olympian Kelsey Stewart, one of two Black players on the pro softball team, was taken aback by the general manager’s tweet.

Members of a pro softball team quit this week in Florida after the general manager tweeted a photo to President Donald Trump bragging that the team was standing for the national anthem. “Everyone respecting the flag!” wrote team executive Connie May in the tweet to the president’s attention Monday night. Members of the Scrap Yard Dawgs team, which includes 11 athletes chosen for the 2021 U.S. Olympics squad, saw the message after their game in Melbourne. Outraged that May used the moment to embrace Trump’s opposition to athletes kneeling during the anthem as a form of anti-racism protest, they quit. “We were used as pawns in a political post, and that’s not OK,” two-time Olympic gold medalist pitcher Cat Osterman told The New York Times. Osterman later told the Houston Chronicle she doesn’t accept the general manager’s explanation that the tweet came “from a good place” to illustrate team unity.

“I never really thought that she didn’t care about my life or Kiki’s life until that post,” Black teammate Kelsey Stewart said of the general manager, according to the Times. Players told the Times that May also repeated the “all lives matter” phrase that some people use to diminish the cause of Black Lives Matter. The team’s scheduled games in Florida were postponed while players try to reorganize without the Houston-based Scrap Yard Dawgs organization, the Houston Chronicle reported. The team had intended to play in nearly two-dozen games in Florida as a comeback from the coronavirus pandemic.

Good on them for not allowing the team to be used as a pro-Trump political pawn.

The South has risen. How are you guys enjoying this era?

Its 90 degrees and the snowflakes are flying in Florida.

Agreed. Now they can be replaced with patriotic Americans.

So you believe in affirmative action for trump pseudo patriots?

Kneeling is a respectful form of protest. ONly snowflakes think otherwise. But I get how being upset over kneeling lets you NOT think about why the kneeling was started to begin with.

Funny how trump supporters can't quite grasp the concept of cause and effect. They seem to constantly confuse the two.

It's an idiotic form of protest that only mixes messages and muddies the water.

Since the Southern Red State governors are all now proudly pro COVID, the team might want to move north.

No, it strikes at the very heart of what makes america america in the first place. You know that whole "equal rights" thing. There ain't nothin' mixed in taking a knee in this regard. It is a protest with a very specific meaning that does not disrespect those who came before fighting and dying under that flag, no matter what that faux patriot Trump might whinge about.

I guess in some people don't kneel for the flag in protest, but feel free to arm themselves to the teeth and storm the state capital over having to wear a mask.

And perhaps you've noticed the losers running around with the flag of traitors claiming some sort of patriotic allegiance to white supremacists.

That's a way bigger friggin insult to the constitution and foundation of the nation than kneeling in silent protest. That sure as hell ain't no mixed or mudded message, but I guess when its in tune with one's own sentiments, its perfectly okay.

Ah, good old forced compliance to the cause. Lovely to see.

Management tried to speak for Labor and got kicked in his wallet.

Damn straight.

It's about as unspecific as you can get. Kneeling could mean just about anything. You could take a knee because you hate capitalism, or take a knee because you think Americans are overworked, or take a knee because you don't like the electoral college, or take a knee to protest military spending...

The one thing all of these have in common is that you're going to be spending all of your time trying to defend your method of protest and none of your time talking about what it is you're protesting. It's mind-boggling stupid to start this again. It literally does more harm than good.

I suppose. Being proudly passive aggressive, were it up to me, the whole team would have knelt during the anthem in all games thereafter.

Absolutely!

On a closely related note President Donald Trump, who knows more about patriotism than anybody, doesn't know the words to the National Anthem (even when he is standing up). What a symbol of nationalism. What a symbol of patriotism. What a selfless man of the people.

Oops, maybe this time.

Fail, again.

Maybe uber patriot Donald Trump has been busy learning the words to God Bless America.

Hmmmm, guess not.

Would you prefer Trump molesting the flag like it's a ***** to grab?

GOP Senators are now gingerly wearing the masks.
They see the cases, hospitalizations, and polls, as do the GOP governors.

It's as if Trump is trying to lose the election with these rallies, with a future one at Mount Rushmore.
He should have waited until Sturgis.

Oh please. It was clearly and repeatedly articulated that taking a knee was to protest unequal justice and dead unarmed police victims. REPEATEDLY but of course the right refused to listen.

Nope Trump and his toadies started screaming about disrespecting the flag as they proudly displayed their confederate battle flags.

AS to spending time defending the methods, its obvious that those opposed to the issue being protested and not having a sufficient argument would attempt to attack the method as opposed to the reason.

ONce again, the right seems more than satisfied with conflating cause and effect. the muddled clarity of trumpian logic.

They're now trying to walk a wire, balancing between reality and Trump's alternate universe. Reality will always win. I have no sympathy. May they all crash and burn!

Pretty hard for GOP governors of AZ, TX, and FL to stomach Trump cutting back on tests and PPE’s. They are the big states at the end of the first wave.

Remarkable to hear CDC say that the number of those testing positive is one-tenth of the real number. As a retired teacher, I can only imagine.

Oh, stop with this "the right" nonsense. People of all political persuasions were turned off by it. And again, a "protest" that has one meaning on its own, and a secret meaning that you have to wait and learn until after the game in an interview is just piss-poor messaging.

He'd have done better by holding up a piece of cardboard with a message scribbled in Marks-A-Lot.

Not true. It was just you Trumpy numb nuts.

Yes, and monkeys could fly out of my butt.

Why stop there? You were on a roll!
They could take a knee because they object to the color of the wallpaper in the men's bathroom.
But as it turns out, they ONLY took a knee for one reason, and you know what that reason is.
But I fully expect you to continue ignoring that reason and I demand that you boycott all professional sports here on out because I got news for ya.

You are going to see a whole lot more people taking a knee in the coming years until black people are treated equally, and are no longer subjected to summary executions while unarmed and handcuffed in broad daylight or assassinated while otherwise in custody and in compliance.

Cancel your ESPN, dude...unless you like watching reruns year after year.
Of course, you could just stop acting like a white supremacist, but I have my doubts.

Oh stop with this nonsense. It was lead by trump and his "base" aka the right. And if you didn't get that it was a protest by kneeling, which should have immediately prompted you and others to scream WTF but instead of actually trying to understand, trump and others of like mind knee jerk a jingoistic response about patriotism.

Did trump win that little bigoted snit? Time wounds all heels and like a thousand other times in his life, his big mouth and stupidity have come back to bite him in the arse.
