Point is; football is the only sport where players are asked to expose their bodies to experience trauma equivalent to a train wreck every 45 seconds.

Basketball and football were being compared a few years ago by an ex-NBA player. Contact sports was the topic; the player stated that basketball was a ‘contact’ sport, football was a ‘collision’ sport.

Never watched hockey...or Rugby...or Aussie Rules Football...

And I get it...football is a violent sport. No one that straps on pads more than 1 year doesnt understand that. Most people know that they will not play beyond high school ball...if they get that far.

I'm not suggesting you have to or should watch football. Just sayin...the Smith injury is, luckily...a freak injury. We see that kind of stuff happen in kickboxing. Hell...we saw it with Gordon Hayward in the NBA just a few years back.

I would like to see some changes to the game. I think a few simple changes would stop a LOT of the head injuries...like 1-ending the highlight reels for big hits, and 2-requiring that all tackles be an attempt to actually TACKLE the player...meaning using your body and arms to actually make a tackle instead of just lowering a shoulder and de-cleating someone. But even then it will still be a violent game.

Hockey was better back in the day before helmets. Strange how a piece of safety equipment suddenly ushered in head hunting. Shame that is too because it's a good skill game.

I agree with you on tackling versus just nailing someone, btw.

However, playing devil's advocate for a moment, in my 20+ years in the Army I've seen much worse with men making a lot less money. Basically Smith, like all the Soldiers I served with, knew what they signed up for.
Every time my wife and I go to the Long Beach VA for one of her appointments we see a bunch of people much less fortunate than Alex but I applaud his determination and his bravery. And I suspect that a lot of vets would too, unless they're Cowboys fans, of course!
Are you better off than you were four years ago?
(I'll give you a minute to take off your mask so you can answer.)
