Daytona 500 Wreck

Holy Crap!

I saw that. It looked even worse than Dale Earnhardt's! Hoping for a better outcome.

Yes, Dale's crash actually appeared to be minor. But, that was before the head restraint system was put in place.

Watching this crash, I see a lot of energy being dissipated over an extended period of time. That's a good thing. These cars are designed to keep the drivers safe.

Here's to hoping the engineering did its job.

That was just a horrible crash.
Hoping he is okay but if you noticed they kept the cameras away when they removed him from wrecked car.

Even with all the safety built into these cars a human body can only take so much.

A lot of race fans were upset how quickly Denny Hamlin celebrated but I don't know how much he knew about the wreck at that moment he finished the race.

He was much more somber at the award ceremony.

From what I recall Dale didn't use the HANS restraint.

Correct. I believe it was optional back then and not very much understood like it is now.

But he insisted that his sons use it. Dale, Jr. had at least 20 concussions.

Please. I joked with my husband that he caused the rain but don't go there.

Oh don't be so uptight. I made it clear with the :2razz: emote that I was just joking.

I would hazard a guess that it was the impact at the drivers door that would have caused the most serious injury.
A lot of G forces in that hit.

Thank God for Haans and full roll cages!

No, the head restraint was in place but Earnhardt refuse to wear it.

Nope, it wasn't clear. I'm not uptight I just don't see a serious injury a joking matter. My husband is a trauma doc who, btw, did a stint at Halifax where Newman is being treated.

TMZ reporting he is listed in serious condition but his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

I keep forgetting, any time we talk about Trump in anything but the most glowing light, we're bound to offend someone.

Whatever. I hope Newman survives and makes a full recovery.

When things like this happen in racing nobody finds any jokes relating to it to be funny at all.

That was the least of Earnhardt's problems.

His belts were mounted totally wrong for comfort, and he wore an open face helmet. Both of which were crazy.

This.

Without them, he'd be dead. No doubt about it.

I'm surprised at that.

I honestly suspected he had been killed, having gone through this countless times before.

But he must have serious injuries to his body, or he wouldn't be at the hospital.

Yeah, whatever is right.

Then I expect you to get upset at Hamlin for fist-pumping his victory AND for driving his car through the grass well after this bad wreck. He shouldn't have celebrated after taking advantage of that crash to win the race, now should he?

Seriously, man. You've got a big, fat double standard going right now about outrage. :thumbdown
