Anybody watching?

I turned over out of curiosity. What is the money involved compared to the NFL?

No longer consider myself to be a serious fan of the NFL......

Honestly, after its debut and failure in 2001, I thought McMahon would have learned his lesson.

Looks like players are broken up into 4 tiers.

Tier 1: $25,000-$60,000 / Game
Each team will pick one franchise player to fit in this pay scale. At $250,000-$600,000 on the season, this is competitive with the NFL minimum salaries for Rookies and Veterans. While blue-chip pass rushers or other exceptional players from the NFL could land here, I expect that tier 1 will consist mostly of QB’s. Former Oklahoma standout and Pittsburgh Steeler Landry Jones has already signed with the league, and will likely end up here.

Tier 2: $15,000-$17,500 / Game
Teams have 3 roster spots available for this level, and will likely use them to find NFL talent beyond the quarterback position. While any top-end prospects could end up here, it seems logical that high-value positions like Edge Rushers, Cornerbacks and Offensive Tackles will fill out this group.

Tier 3: $6,000-$10,000 / Game
The bulk of rosters will be filled here, as 23/45 spots consist of Tier 3 players. With annual earnings reaching into six figures, this will be particularly enticing for players coming out of college. While NCAA pay is still a hotly contested issue, the XFL has not issued eligibility requirements, so prospects looking to make a name for themselves while being paid will take a long look at the league.

Tier 4: $5,000-$6,000 / Game
The last 18 spots of each roster will be rounded out here, and it’ll be an interesting trove of football ronin. The tier 4 players will likely include specialists and backups, but don’t count them out, as unlikely stars have emerged from roster fringes countless times in football. Despite being the lowest tier, this pay grade is extremely competitive with other football leagues like the AAF and AFL.

Watched Seattle versus Washington. It was entertaining. The new rules are interesting for sure. Kickoffs are cray cray.

Totally agree about the kickoffs. But overall, I thought it was fun, especially hearing the calls and interviewing players on the field.
The smaller stadium seemed intimate and the fans pumped.

I might check out the game next week.

I watched part of that same game as well and loved the new rules. The NFL should look at these new rules. Certainly they made the game more entertaining. I think I'll continue to follow the XFL. Certainly beats not having any football to watch. I loved the Super Bowl commercial advertising the league; pretty funny with the doctor talking about football withdrawal and the cure for it: the XFL.

I read an article saying that some of the quarterbacks will be able to make close to $500,000 during the season, that's not bad.

Better get that while it's available, and find a good financial adviser.

I think they are doing it right this time. I think what ultimately sunk the previous attempt was the god awful WWE crossover announcers and the attempt to script the off-field like it was WWE Raw.

This time they have some of the same weird on-field rules that make the games interesting, but are going the traditional announcer route, making it just seem more professional.

I'll watch it. Go DC Defenders!

Are you sure?

I am. It sucks that my favorite sport has the shortest season.

I've watched at least part of all four games and have been entertained. Seeing Jerry Glanville wearing two headsets is a plus.

Way lower.

I know nothing about the XFL. I hear that they can hold out for several seasons so their success doesn't depend on this season alone. But, how can they be successful. The NFL is already diluted how can another league produce good football? I predict they will fail.

Vince McMahon is a marketing genius.

Maybe if they make it an attractive alternative to college football for top prospects coming out of high school, as a way to get a nice salary, and then move up to the NFL.

Well, interesting idea.

Week two and still watching.

I had a discussion with some coworkers about this very thing. If college players are going to get paid then they might as well go pro.

Idea #2: If the XFL takes hold, then attempt to merge with the CFL. That would make an international league of 18 teams, they could then seek to add teams in UK and Mexico.

Our conclusion was that the XFL is very much like watching college football with fewer lopsided games. That is a good thing.
