ESPN is planning to pay Tony Romo a freaking $14 million to poach him from CBS. This would make of him the highest paid TV commentator ever.

Tony Romo is intelligent and insightful. He adds to the knowledge of a football fan who is watching the game he is commentating upon. So much better than Buck and Troy!

And he is hilarious. He called the 12-men penalty last game way ahead of the officials... and made this hilarious comment:

[FONT=&quot]“There’s a flag which they should have called 10 minutes ago when I said there were 12 people on the field. I think they just decided to start talking about it now: ‘Can they play with 12?’ ‘Nope, it’s 11.’ ‘You’re sure?’ ‘Yes. Can’t play with 12. We’ve still got that rule.'”

Who knows if he takes it. CBS has higher ratings and the job undoubtedly has fewer hours than what ESPN will try to force out of him for that price tag. Anyway, rumor is CBS is already lining up Drew Brees to replace Romo if he jumps ship.

As Brent Musburger said, "stop the hype."

He is good, but let's not hype him as reinventing being a commentator.

The games that ESPN get (pro) are usually not top tier. If Romo goes, I imagine he will be doing NCAA games as well. What’s he making now? He has been an above average announcer/color guy.

He is great.. I hope he stays on CBS.

Many, many times he'll call the play before it happens.

He is very good in the booth, I hope he stays where he is.

Romo is very very good, the best of this era IMHO. But I'm old school. My favorite color commentators remain Pat Summerall and Dan Dierdorf.

Summerall, yeah... Dieroff for me, not so much.

And yeah Romo is the best now.

Oh sure. Says the guy who is NOT being offered 14 million dollars in salary.

Romo > Bucky. By far. By very very very far.

Many, MANY moons ago when ABC still did the Monday night game, on the radio I 'think'(not sure) CBS sports did the Monday night game and a color commentator for CBS was the old Chief coach Hank Stram. He was also VERY good. He didn't have the humor and personality of Romo, but he was very smart, insightful and often told the listener what was going to happen before it did.

He mostly did the Monday night games on the radio for many years. I think he did some TV broadcast later, but I mostly remember him for his MNF radio work, he was spectacular.

I haven't thought about Madden in some time. But for me there was just something nostalgia about hearing his voice. In some crazy way I place Madden among sport commentators the way I do Johnny Carson with nighttime talk hosts.

Am really surprised at how much I enjoy hearing Tony Romo because I couldn't stand him as a player.

But $14 million! It is just amazing how much money TV has to sprinkle on people. My gawd, Al Roker makes $8 million a year.

As a Redskins fan I was very glad that Romo was the Cowboys' QB.

I'm not sure how ESPN stays in business with all the money they fling around out there. Not when everyone is cutting the chord.

Dandy Don, Costello and Gifford had a chemistry. The only one I liked was Meredith. Cossell was hard to listen to and Gifford was buttoned up too tight, imo.

When the game got out of hand, Meredith could be counted on to break in with “turn out the lights, the party’s over....”

I miss OJ. :)

Can we all agree that Cris Collinsworth might just be the WORST commentator ever?
Or at least he's solidly in the running?

Nah. He's ok. I prefer Romo though.

I like John Madden myself. Madden and Summerall made a very good team.

After listening to Troy Aickman last night, I'd say Romo is still not the best QB or commentator from Dallas.
