Williams on his game-winning 4-yard touchdown catch in overtime of the Vikings' 26-20 victory.

"There is contact by both players, but none of that contact rises to the level of a foul," said the NFL's senior vice president of officiating, Al Riveron, who briefly reviewed the play from the league's command center in New York. "This is consistent with what we've done all year long -- we left the ruling on the field. We let it stand."
The replay review process was completed so quickly that some Saints players didn't realize it had been reviewed. . . ."
And my bet is that in spite of the cursory review, if it had been called it also would have stood. Replay officials follow a clear rule of judgement (or are supposed to) that they won't overturn calls without clear and convincing evidence to the contrary.

Al Riveron was correct in not overturning the call because its not clear and convincing - no matter how he phrases his excuse. But there is little doubt in my mind, having seen plenty of OPI in the regular season, that this one would have been called (more likely than not) by a field ref during the regular season. The field refs may have had a bad angle so I'm not flaming them (as I did last time).

PS - The incidental hand contact of the defender didn't impede the catch, and clearly happened only because the receiver had pushed off the defender at arm's length.

THAT is as clear a push off as I have seen anywhere.

They should either ditch the new change or follow it. "Clear and convincing" apparently has no meaning. There can be no more "clear and convincing" evidence of offensive pass interference than a 1 on 1 play, isolated at a very manageable game speed where the offensive player not only initiatives contact but extends the arm fully, causing (a considerably smaller) defensive player to be pushed away from the waist up, creating a very clear and definable separation for advantage. If you arent going to use the new rule to reverse THAT non-call...then just get rid of the rule.

Of course not - because the offensive player caught the football. If P.J. Williams had intercepted it, this would be a different story. But there is no way you can call it "incidental contact" when #82 was clearly pushing him.

Nah. If that were called closely then Michael Irvin would not be in the HoF.

And, in case I wasn't clear, I agree - the defender's hand only brushed number 82's hand while number 82 had his hand and arm fully extended, pushing the defender off. That said, the missed call was not as flagrant or determinative as last years. If 82 had not pushed off there is a good chance Williams would have run into him without turning around...if Williams had stood his ground.

So how does a guy like this fall to the last pick of the second round?

No non-call will ever be as flagrant as the one last year. That is simply impossible. Throughout the NFL's discussions about how to make pass interference reviewable, I thought it should be called the Nickell Robey-Coleman Rule.

What was P.J. Williams supposed to do? Keep his hands off Kyle Rudolph?

I never would have guessed he was not a first-round pick. He is DOMINANT for Seattle.

The guy is an altar boy to boot. He apparently didnt do well on the cone drill. Seattle got a lottery pick.
