Cleveland Browns released defensive back Jermaine Whitehead on Monday after he responded with threats against those who criticized him for a lackluster performance in a loss against the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

Whitehead drew the fury of fans and the criticism of journalists after he missed a tackle on a Noah Fant 75-yard touchdown catch and another big play. According to ESPN, Whitehead’s Twitter account was suspended before he left the locker room. He did not take questions from the media.

Whitehead apologized for his play on Instagram, but not for his comments.

I am not sure what type of operations the Browns are running but this is a problem with athletes today - Spending too much time on social media.

Here is also a quote by the browns defensive coordinator about Whitehead during training camp:

While recently talking about finding defensive leaders in 2019, Wilks said that players such as Myles Garrett and Denzel Ward are considered team leaders due to their talent. He then mentioned safety Jermaine Whitehead, who he said is an intelligent player that takes control on the field which makes him someone to look up to.

Wilks then applauded the communication of Whitehead, saying that he’s a player who makes sure that his teammates are all lining up where they’re supposed to. That’s a huge job for a safety, who is often times in the best position to see the whole field and therefore vital the success of a defense.
