Right now, Eliud Kipchoge is on course in Vienna to become the first man to run a marathon under 2 hours.

I wasn't alive to see Roger Bannister crack the mile under 4 minutes and now many top athletes do this regularly. Anyone else watching?

Link to live video.

1 hour, 59 minutes and 40.2 seconds

I just don't get why anybody cares.

There are medical researchers finding the pathways to cure cancer. There are people building a space industry which will be the greatest single jump in human wealth ever.

Some bloke ran fast. No drugs involved...

You don't think some of those medical researchers are inspired by athletes? Or that athletes are also inspired by medical researchers?

Some day, you should research and find out who Francis Wells is, a man inspired by someone else in another field completely. Might help you understand why the best of the best look to each other, even across time to move themselves forward.

Amazing accomplishment.
Around 4 four and a half minutes per mile......for 26+ miles.
Unbelievable......I'm exhausted just thinking about this feat...and since it's 2 AM West Coast time....I'm going to bed.
Good night.

It's totally unreal what the human body is capable of. To think I'm super proud of my 49 minute 10k.

A climate science denier trying to derail a sports thread by calling for more science, the irony is just too much. Why did you even come into this subforum?

This is an amazing accomplishment and Kipchoge has done what many thought was an impossibility. I myself have run many 26 mile marathons and know what it takes. My hat is off to this amazing athlete.

If we had the open use of drugs to enhance human performance that would be very true. It would have a very positive effect on humanity.

But drugs are evil arn't they??

It is my wish to see humanity advance and not be derailed by bad scicen that causes me to see that there is no problem from a warmer world.

That you Alarmists always run from discussing the science, except to throw in the idea that it is settled, which is just a way to avoid thinking, shows that you are the enemy of reasoned thought.

When someone attempts to discuss the science with you, you start quoting conspiracy blogs and ignore the actual scientific consensus, evidence and conclusions from real scientists. Absolutely no idea what any of your incoherent rambling has to do with sports or marathon running.

Makes me wonder if that pack of runners right behind him beat the 2 hour mark as well. If not, they were mighty close.

No. I ask you questions and you run away.

Feel free to answer my challenge about finding any significant trouble with a slightly warmer world. Get my $100. Enjoy.

So you prove you know nothing about Europe and then even less about the Kurdish situation and now you think one set of pace-setters ran the whole 26.2 miles too?

Too funny. Chagos is right..

YOU

KNOW

NOTHING.

I have NO IDEA why you quoted me to make that response. Nothing to do with what I said.

Has nothing to do with the topic of the thread but that is not unusual. Personal attacks are all you and Chiggars can offer up with your menstrual terrorist-loving "intellects".

OK, so do you believe the 40 man pace-setting team that ran today all nearly ran sub 2 hour marathons or do you think they ran in stages to keep the pace going?

It is a shame it won't go into the record books since it was not done with standard rules for competitions. The whole event was located, timed and choreographed for the specific purpose of getting him crossing the two hour mark.

You really going to discuss ANY sports feat with someone who apparently doesn't know what "menstrual" is?

Kind of reminds me of the story of little Billy being so pissed off with his biology teacher having flunked him, that he's going to kick her in the nuts.

1 hour, 59 minutes and 40.2 seconds
Amazing.

That it wasn't done under "normal" match conditions takes nothing from it. I recall, some time ago, having heard Kipchoge answer the question of whether he thought he'd ever break the 2 hours, that somebody certainly would and maybe it would be he.

Now we know.

Wel, he/she/it tried try and pretend to know something of the event so I challenged him/her/it to back the opinion up.

You notice said opinion wasn't backed up? I didn't expect it either. :lamo
