NCAA Music in Musical Chairs May Be Stopping Soon

Where do you think the top athletes will go to college if they can earn endorsement money?
Newsom has the power to change NCAA rules?
Will the leagues and teams outside California challenge this in court?

Well there is nothing stopping other states from doing the same thing and remaining competitive. I am sure state law overrides the rules of a sports organization.

You mean above board?
Who is the NCAA compared to California?
I am sure there will be lawyers drooling?

This has been brewing for decades.........

About time

College athletes will be able to make some money, and in some cases the only money they would make before a career ending injury. Now it just wont be the NCAA and the universities making money off the athletes, which is entirely fair

Could the NCAA kick California uni's out of the NCAA?

The NCAA shares that money - individual players will not.

I would think if the athlete signs an endorsement deal the athlete would get the money, not the NCAA

Kinda like the old plantation system?

House of cards for a long time, imo.

To your # 9 NCAA “standing firm,” when have they done that?

I agree that the NCAA may be tempted to let CA pressure them into making (accepting?) rule changes but that would open the door to any state making similar demands that NCAA rules be changed.

If the NCAA allows each state to dictate their own NCAA rules/policy then chaos would ensue. Time for the NCAA to stand firm and say goodbye to CA teams in all sports.

Exactly, thus that athlete is being paid which is against NCAA rules.

The epitome of NCAA fecklessness was demonstrated a few years ago. A few Ohio State players had been found to have violated NCAA rules by selling/trading game jerseys and such for tattoos and other perks. The NCAA decided to suspend the players for multiple games. Sentence to be served after that year’s Rose Bowl, in the following season.........

They are not directly getting paid to play sports, but would be getting paid because of their "fame" which came from playing sports

Yep, the NCAA does not wish to disrupt their revenue stream. For that reason alone they should not allow players or the schools, much less state governments, to start making ever more side deals.

Yep, but that "fame" is from being part of an NCAA team. No more play, then no more pay.

I’m not sure where you fall on this issue.....the NCAA has been parrying threats on it’s power/money for some time. Mostly it’s money.....there used to be a handful of football bowl games, I remember when the Sugar Bowl became the USF&G Sugar Bowl. Yes, I am old and even as a kid when this happened, I said, “huh?”

So states should have no control over contract law? They would never leave California there is too much money in it.

That is what CA is counting on. Of course, the NCAA cannot have different rules in each state so they can either adopt the CA rule nationwide or sanction those paid players and/or their teams.

Well sucks to be the NCAA. This is what happens when you get greedy.

I dont get your joke. But as to the topic, while I think California can do whatever stupid thing they want, its nice to finally see them admit that college sports is all about entertainment and money, not educating. I only hope this means the tax payers can stop footing the bill for these entertainers "tuition". Have them report all their income to the state and deduct room and board.
