An Iranian woman detained for dressing as a man to sneak into a stadium to watch a football match has died after setting herself on fire upon learning she could spend six months in prison, semi-official news outlets reported Tuesday.

The self-immolation death of a 29-year-old known as Sahar Khodayari has become a hashtag trend across social media in the Islamic Republic.

Khodayari died on Monday at a hospital in Tehran, Iran's capital, after suffering burns across 90% of her body. She had been on a respirator since dousing herself with gasoline in front of Tehran's Ershad courthouse on Sept. 2, according to the Iranian news website Rokna, which publishes in Iran with government permission.

She had just learned she could be tried by a Revolutionary Court in Iran and be put in prison for six months, her father told the website.

Khodayari's sister told pro-reform Shahrvand newspaper that her sister dealt with bipolar disorder. Her father said she had stopped taking medication a year ago.

RIP. What a horrible way to go out.

I used to sneak into countless games as a kid.

I recently lost a family member to mental illness and suicide. This is such a tragic story. I wish this woman's family well as they try to heal.

Terrible news, very very sorry to hear that :(

This woman has done more for women's rights in Iran with one bottle of gasoline than Donald Trump has with all of his sanctions.

Doubtful. That would actually require a system of government responsive to the desires of the people. Since Iran's government is ultimately a religious autocracy, there is no need to recognize women's rights unless the regime itself is threatened by the collective outrage of its citizens boiling over into outright revolution.

See thats a perfect example of a woman PRETENDING to be a man so she can get in.

I hope her death will set aflame to the regime.

How do you think she has affected women's rights in Iran?

You kidding? It got them talking, did it not? It made headlines. Got international attention. Use your brain.

If the regime is threatened by the collective outrage of it's citizens, then they must be responsive to the desires of their people. Every government must be, if they wish to remain in power.

There has already been a major response among the Iranian people. They are more progressive than we give them credit for, and they will put pressure on their government to liberalize.

You honestly think the Ayatollah will "liberalize"?!? :lamo

Many Iranians were hoping that the US under Obama would come to their aid during the massive Green Movement back in 2009. When he just let them die on the vine (quite literally), and kept quiet about the deaths and imprisonments resulting from it as the regime crushed it underfoot, they felt they had been betrayed.

The Islamic Republic is just hanging on with its fingernails. If they go, it will be a huge sigh of relief for most Iranians, not to mention just about all their neighbors, including Israel. It is a tinderbox waiting for a little match. The US could sorta just light a cigarette and "accidentally" toss that match inside...

It makes no difference, his people have made it clear that they want a more liberal, democratic society. The Islamic republic will either move in the same direction as their people, or they will eventually collapse. There is no other option.

There is a reason why the Ayatollah has his own personal army ...

There are plenty of cigarettes in Iran with Uncle Sam's fingerprints on them.

Trump owns your ass... how pathetically owned does a person have to be in order to bring up Trump when the topic is an Iranian women dying?

Extremely!
