Saw there wasn’t a thread already started, what does everyone think so far?

Manchester United continue to have issues, I mean I feel bad for Ole Gunnar, it’s hard to tell whether he’s out of his depth or if his players are letting him down but the expectation that simply due to the legacy of the club that they should be doing well just because is quite folly, they need a solid plan and time to get back on their feet if they ever will in the foreseeable future.

Arsenal continues to also have some difficulties.

Tottenham also not off to a stellar start especially with a loss to Newcastle which shouldn’t even be in the cards.

Liverpool and Manchester City of course off to the races and perhaps in short order making the EPL a two horse race, it’s gonna be tough.

Champions league will be interesting as always, moment of silence for Slavia Praha, though at least it’ll be a good pay day for them.

anyone else’s thoughts?

It will be a two horse race in the EPL...Liverpool and Manchester City. The rest will fight over 3rd and 4th place and are relatively poor teams. The transfer window was also quite poor for the EPL.

The CL could be interesting, but hoping for Juve to win based alone on Buffon finally getting the CL medal.

The transfer fees are absolutely vomit inducing, I mean £80 million for the likes of Harry McGuire is insanity, if UEFA gets its way with the new champions league format, it’ll practically kill all the domestic leagues and create a European super league.

I mean look, it’s been said for years but this kind of spending is simply not sustainable, somethings gotta give and the wage pressures especially in the lower leagues where I saw a statistic it’s like, in the premier league because of more revenue, wages account for an average of 50 something percent, whereas in the championship it averages over a 100 percent and if UEFA gets its way that pressure will creep up for the EPL while those lucky enough to get in that exclusive club will be fine for now, it’s building a bubble that will burst in spectacular fashion.

McGuire high price is because he is English. He is an average defender, but because he is English and homegrown, then his price is instantly doubled so that teams can meet UEFA CL requirements. You see it with a lot of English players.. on massive wages but are benchwarmers for the CL requirements.

Well if and when the UK leaves the EU, then the Bosman ruling and other UEFA based EU regulations basically wont be relevant anymore for the EPL. This will have consequences but as long as we dont know how non British players status (not to mention everyone else) will be. That has pushed up wages in the UK as well. And then the general issue for especially South American players, the weather and food... lets put it this way, money talks but it takes a lot of money to convince the family of a top player to move to boring Manchester or Liverpool and since London does not have any real competitive teams then well..

Sadly though on the continent we have PSG, who basically started off the insane prices with the Neymar hijack. UEFA can isolate the EPL now with Brexit, but PSG is a big problem. Ironically though, the biggest spenders this transfer season was La Liga and Serie A.

Messi wins World Player of the Year. Would have preferred a Liverpool player since they won the CL, but since thier only candidate was a defender then I guess it is okay. At least it was not the fraud Ronaldo again.

Why do you call Ronaldo a fraud?

Well I don’t think they spent £80 million on Macguire strictly because of CL requirements, I genuinely think they thought he was an answer to their defensive issues...

I’ll bet he wished he’d stayed at Leicester though...

Because he has won the award when he did not deserve it at all. He basically won it because he was at Real Madrid, much like Modric won it last year.

My point was/is that the price tag goes up because of his nationality/homegrown status when the buyer is a team like Man City because they are buying players for success instead of having home grown players.

You’d be hard pressed to say I’m a Ronaldo fan, I’m certainly not, but the awards are all bull**** anyway but it hardly makes Ronaldo a fraud, like him or not, he is one of the most successful players of all time.

It also has to do with the fact it was Manchester United and transfer fees are always gonna be raised a fair amount when big clubs, at least in theory, comes knocking, doesn’t make it any less nauseating as Neamars transfer to PSG, the whole thing is just bananas and unsustainable.

Looks like Liverpool has won the EPL before Christmas.

Yeh they just can't be stopped right now. Easily the best team in Europe for me currently.

Maybe, but thier domination in England can be deceptive on thier actual strength. The other English contenders just suck a lot at the moment.

Will be interesting to see what City does.. Focus on CL and give up the EPL or do both. Liverpool can do both but will focus on the EPL. The rest have no chance.

Congrats to Liverpool in winning the EPL 2019-20. Will they go undefeated?

Really hope not. They are so far ahead now that they can start concentrating on the Champs Lg as well....

Well as I see it.. Liverpool has so many CL that another one wont really matter. The EPL is big as it will finally give them one, but more importantly they start catching up to Man U. As a bonus, going undefeated will shut up Arsenal fans finally, so another win!

The virus is going to cause havoc with the next few months of football. How are they even going to finish the domestic season in time for Euro 2020?

Are they even going to hold Euro 2020? Olympics might be delayed a year.

The next few days/weeks will decide it. I suspect the French, Italian and Spanish seasons are over unless the spread can be curtailed within the next month.

They have suspended all 3rd division and below sports for all of Spain and are presently negotiating for 1st and 2nd division football and other sports.

Roma who were to play in Spain next week have been denied entry. Napoli who play Barcelona will get the same treatment I suspect.

Tonight's CL might be the last of the season, as UEFA are holding meetings on delaying or cancelling altogether.

Several top division footballers have been infected in Germany and France. Here locally a 2nd division handball team has been hit.

So I think sports is going to be over for a few months unless they play behind closed doors, which many don't want.

I can see them cancelling the Euro's especially given the fact its spread out over several countries this year.

I'm not saying the BBC is feeling the absence of live sport, but Pete might be pleased to know that I'm watching a re-run of the Euro 92 final between Netherlands and Denmark! Denmark are one nil up after 15 minutes...
