2019-2020 NHL Thread - Ice Hockey Baby!!!

Jay Bouwmeester collapsed on the StL bench tonight. Game cancelled, no word yet on his condition.

Oilers/Flames tonight, both goalies got game misconducts. Never have I seen that happen...

“Old time hockey”... in the days of bench-clearing brawls and players going into the stands... it was not unusual.

Great trade by Toronto with the Kings.

Campbell was playing well... Clifford is a horse.

Jay Bouwmeester Doing "Very Well"

Midway through the first period last night, Bouwmeester had a cardiac event while sitting on the St. Louis bench and collapsed behind the boards. Immediately trainers and physicians from both teams rushed to his aid, administering a defibrillator to restart his heart and bring him back to consciousness.

Holy hell!

Somehow or another the Flyers have crawled, scratched, and perhaps even silently snuck into 8th place overall in the entire NHL.

Obviously a new coach, and some new philosophies have proven results when a team is drastically under-performing.

I still don't think this team can be consistently good enough to make a true run at anything playoff related, but keeping my fingers crossed they continue to surprise.

Bruins may actually be a first place team that wins in the playoffs.

Ex Zamboni driver in goal for Carolina. They are beating Toronto in Toronto 6 - 3. The guy is 42, an emergency goalie. I hope he wins.

David Ayres, 2 goals on first 3 shots then zippo. Toronto got like 7 shots on goal the 3rd period. Good for him! Toronto fans gave him a standing O after booing their own team off the ice.

The goalie if from Toronto, practices with Toronto, but beat Toronto to help the visiting team. Oldest goaltender ever to win his debut, with the previous record being set in 1926.

That is so like the Leafs, showing lots of promise early and then fizzle.

Thanks for the link - bottom line for me, this Leafs team is perhaps the most unlikeable group of players I've ever had the misfortune of seeing on a team I support. There is a total lack of character and professional work ethic with many of the most important members of the team and management has only exacerbated the problem by financially rewarding young players who've accomplished absolutely nothing to merit such rewards. This team is going nowhere and won't be able to improve for the better part of a decade considering the foolish contracts that will bind them for years to come. I'd rather be a fan of the Red Wings now than of this Leafs team.

Muzzin, 4 years, 5.625 AAV. Projected 77 million cap hit for team next year.

And Wings are going to suck awhile yet. Ottawa tho, with 3 possible lottery picks this summer.

NHL player Jay Bouwmeester speaks for the first time since cardiac episode during game - CNN

St. Louis Blues defenseman Jay Bouwmeester thanked medical personnel for saving his life in his first public address since he was revived with a defibrillator during a game.

"It happened in the absolute best place that it could happen because of all the protocols they have in place and how people responded so quickly," he said Wednesday. "No. 1, they saved my life and No. 2, the fact that they could get on it so fast was very helpful."

Bobby Ryan has been away recovering from alcohol addiction. He returned from over 3 months away, and scored a hat trick on his return and got a great reception from the crowd.

Great sport, but too bad they still can't get rid of the thug factor. Head hunting appears to be alive and well, even after all the suspensions and pay deductions. That crap ruins the game.

NEW YORK (March 12, 2020) – National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman today released the following statement regarding the 2019-20 NHL season:

“In light of ongoing developments resulting from the coronavirus, and after consulting with medical experts and convening a conference call of the Board of Governors, the National Hockey League is announcing today that it will pause the 2019‑20 season beginning with tonight’s games.

“The NHL has been attempting to follow the mandates of health experts and local authorities, while preparing for any possible developments without taking premature or unnecessary measures. However, following last night’s news that an NBA player has tested positive for coronavirus – and given that our leagues share so many facilities and locker rooms and it now seems likely that some member of the NHL community would test positive at some point – it is no longer appropriate to try to continue to play games at this time.

“We will continue to monitor all the appropriate medical advice, and we will encourage our players and other members of the NHL community to take all reasonable precautions – including by self-quarantine, where appropriate. Our goal is to resume play as soon as it is appropriate and prudent, so that we will be able to complete the season and award the Stanley Cup. Until then, we thank NHL fans for your patience and hope you stay healthy.”

Didn’t watch it all, but most of those were hard, clean hits.

You have to understand hockey... it’s a physical game, and hitting hard is used to (a) remove the player from the puck (or as any kid was taught when I played... take the body, not the puck)... (b) to make players fearful... because if you know you’re going to get hit, you’re more likely to make a bad play, and to (c) punish the opposition... it’s a physical game (see point “b”).

This is why Toronto wouldn’t go far in the playoffs should they make it. Too many ballerina’s, not enough grit.

As for fighting... nobody gets more than a cut, and it is better than the Euro solution... which is cheap shots and using your stick.

There’s a fraction of the brutality as the old clutch-and-grab era. Everyone has to be able to play today... but with the greater speed, comes more spectacular hits.
