2019-2020 NHL Thread - Ice Hockey Baby!!!

Players association does not opt out of contract, so hockey until '22 at least.

Marner says two qualifying offers where made to him, but he did not even look at them. Columbus and Minnesota are the most likely teams, but that is not for sure. Seems odd since it would have cost a team 4 first round picks.

I was watching some of the Flyers Bruins preseason game last night and while I know it's dreadfully early to be making any claims regarding the coming season I simply felt like I was watching EXACTLY the same team I saw last year. Just nothing to create a spark of hope.

At any rate, what did grab my attention was the remark I heard about the coming "home opener" with the New Jersey Devils.
Apparently during the summer Wayne Simmonds signed with the Devil's.

So I'll call this out right now.

The Wayne-Train will be a key factor in the Devil's making the Flyers look quite pathetic at least twice this coming season.

I know it is the preseason, but it looks like the Devils will be really exciting to watch, and could be pretty good.

Speaking of the Flyers, I was watching their game against the Isles a few days ago and saw a refreshing sight: Chris Stewart brawling on the ice. He didn't spend much time with the Wild, but he was always one of my favorites. Glad to see he got straightened out whatever issues he was having that kept him from playing in Europe last year. Now I hope he makes the cut.

Guy Lafluer underwent successful quadruple bypass surgery today. Hope things go well for his recovery, he was one of the first players I was a fan of.

Yes, it is the preseason and that doesn't count - the Devils, while improved last season, could be the NFL version of the Cleveland Browns - new talent on paper, lots of media hype, not yet ready for prime time.

Speaking of preseason, if the last two games between the Leafs and the Red Wings is any indication, Detroit is in for a really bad year. Leafs look like world beaters - 4 shutouts in the preseason - see overhyped comments re Devils above for context.

Most encouraging for Leafs fans is the upgrade on defense and in particular the terrific play of 19 yr old Rasmus Sandin who looks like he could be an allstar on defense for years to come - very unusual for such a young player on defense to be so poised. But again, see overhyped comments above for context.

Lafleur smoked like a coal fired electricity smokestack all his playing career and later in life so not surprising he'd have heart issues now. While it's the heart, bypass surgery isn't such a big deal anymore. The surgery won't be the issue but the extent of damage he's already done to his heart may be.

With preseason NHL hockey starting in less than 10 days, I’m shocked there’s no new NHL thread.
So here ya go.

Who’s going to be the 2019-2020 Stanley Cup Champion?
What are your hopes and predictions for your favorite team?
Which basement dwelling team from last year shakes up the league this year?
Which front runner from last year tanks this year?

For me, and the Flyers, I’m just hoping for some consistency. Our future hopes and dreams lie with the young goaltender Carter Hart. Our fears lie with basically everyone else not really changing.

I feel, as last year, the Flyers will struggle to make the playoffs. If they make it, they’ll get bounced first round. I just don’t see any true reason to believe “this year will be different”.

I hope I’m wrong.

Let's get this going. I need some ice hockey talk.

Florida Panthers? Quenneville. Bobrovsky. Are they a force to be this season?
Will Tampa Bay prove they can actually win a playoff series this year?

And just to get it out there from the start: F The Penguins!!!

To answer your questions:

Florida for Le Coupe Stanley. Underrated, young, fast, deep, great goaltending and a coach who knows how. They need to get off to a good start... they’ve sucked early the past couple years and came close but couldn’t make up the deficit.

Hope LA makes the playoffs.

Watch out for Vancouver. Looking forward to the Oilers sucking again... ROTFLOL...

A “tanker” among teams that finished 1st or 2nd... San Jose.

I recall he was smoking between periods. Amazing ****. Guys I played with did it too. Others chewed... used “snus”. Was weird seeing the Swedes use it as they put it under their top lip... you don’t spit then, but they look handicapped with a “snus” in.

Evander Kane going to miss the start of the season:

I have some small sympathy here as the linesman accidentally pulled him down, but you do not push, shove, or otherwise physically do anything towards a ref or linesman.

Detroit is going to lose alot this year, and trade away a bunch of elder players. Detroit wants to trade(and realistically has a chance of doing so) Green, Ericsson, Daley, Helm, Glendening, Filpulla, Howard or Bernier if anyone makes an offer, and Abdelkader, though no one is going to take Abdelkader. Detroit has 8 picks in the draft next year, and would like to get that up to at least 12.

I am not sold on the Leafs. I suspect they are going to score alot, and give up alot.

Leafs defense is poised to surprise a lot of people - vastly improved, in my view, over the past couple of years.

I know everyone has been waiting for it(so you can laugh at me), so here it is, my predictions:

Eastern Conference
Metropolitan
1: Washington-Could be any of about 5 teams, the Metro is wide open
2: Philadelphia-it could happen...
3: New Jersey-Jersey is on the rise, and begins what will be quite a few playoff years

Atlantic
1: Tampa-Still more talent than any other team in the league
2: Boston-no team dives for power plays as well as Boston
3: Toronto-A ****ton of talent, but not nearly enough depth

Wildcards
1: Carolina-Can make a midseason trade for the impact goal scorer they need. They have the assets and cap room
2: Montreal-I could happen

Western Conference
Central
1: St. Louis-They won it all last season for a reason, and are actually slightly improved
2: Nashville-Lot of talent here
3: Dallas-Here, or last in the league. No middle ground, either really good, or really bad

Pacific
1,2,3: Calgary, San Jose, Vegas, in some order. Really, who knows out there. Those teams are really close, and better than the rest of the division

Wildcards
1: Winipeg-Sure, let's go with that
2: Arizona-it could happen

And your 2020 Stanley Cup winner:

Tampa Bay!

The Bolts will perform well in the regular season, but will fold like Superman on laundry day in the post season. Just like always.

I am stuck pulling for my backup team (VEGAS!) because I don't see the Wild doing anything this year. I had low hopes for them to begin with, and their preseason performance isn't bolstering my confidence.

A rather inauspicious start to the season for my Leafs, however, a win is a win and the Leafs historically have difficulty with the Senators in the regular season before crushing them in the playoffs, if they meet. Hopefully, they won't be relying simply on outscoring their opponents every game - they played some pretty good defense in the exhibition games which gave me hope they were getting better at defending their own end, but time will tell.

Enjoy the season everyone!!

Just heard last night during the Vegas/SJ game that the Jets are having to do without Big Buff, possibly for the whole season. Wondering how this will affect their year...

I have not followed the off season at all, and a a wild fan I know I'm am following an underdog team however I will always hate the trader "stars" and forever support the state of hockey!!!

In the second period of game today, Carolina outshot Tampa 17-0. I don’t remember ever seeing a team get zero shots in a period.

Anthony Mantha, 2 games, 5 goals, 2 assists.

Simmonds says first game for Devils against Flyers will be 'pretty weird' | NHL.com

"He embodied the style of play that they've played for quite some time," Palmieri said. "He's one of the toughest guys in the League to play against with his size, his skill and how tough he is, how good of a competitor he is. That's something I'm sure the Philly fans appreciated over the years, but I'm sure it's going to sting them a little bit to see him in a Devils jersey."

It's really gonna suck to see Simmonds in a Devil's uniform.

Gonna be even worse when he stings the crap out of the Flyers, which we all know is gonna happen.

Well, it did suck to see Simmonds in Devil's uniform, but the outcome of the game was far more pleasant than I expected.
Devil's are obviously struggling.

Carter Hart truly won this game for the Flyers. His insane glove save during the 1:57 of 5-on-3 Devil's powerplay took all the wind out of the Devil's sails.

A nice 4-0 home opener shut-out for the Orange & Black. Thanks to Carter Hart.

As of today, the Buffalo Sabers are the #1 team in the entire NHL.

Who'd a thunk it????

yeah yeah yeah - less than 10 games into an 82 game season, but still
