NBA - Summer 2019 Off-season

When reading about the Lakers' trade for Davis, I was reminded of the Nets trade for Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce and how that trade and the boatload of draft picks the Nets sent to the Celtics affected both franchises in the intervening years. The cancerous LeBron James may have just set the Lakers back a decade with his selfish demands.

Anyone with a brain would agree a healthy Warriors team would have dominated the Raptors.

How does that apply to the quote you replied to?

You made several outrageous comments in that thread, all of which were false, and one which ended in disaster.

James has no more than two years of elite play left in him. But, the Lakers have not been to the playoffs in ages. So, we are talking low bar here.

The idea with AD, I am sure, is to get to the playoffs, hopefully with LeBron dragging them to the conference finals, and maybe stealing a ring or two before he plays like Kobe did in his final year.

The problem: I don't think LeBron is driven in LA like he was in Cleveland.

I don't really trust Kyrie Irving. He seems to have ghosted his current employer The Celtics.

I am not sure he will elevate the Brooklyn Nets without another star.

Kyrie has a lot of weaknesses. Exciting player, but he plays crappy defense and has not yet proven he can be the man. He needs to hook up with a healthy KD or Kawhi.

Kyrie and KD might just sulk together.
I can imagine Kawhi telling Kyrie: "My way or the highway."

I don't see LeBron driven by anything but LeBron. Unlike a true superstar like Leonard, LeBron is nothing about team chemistry and all about what LeBron wants and needs. LeBron is a carpetbagger, as it relates to LA. He inserted himself into the Lakers for the sole purpose of furthering his desire for a career in entertainment following his career in basketball. The minute that becomes truly viable, if it does, is the minute he abandons the Lakers and basketball for good.

NBA Execs Skeptical Lakers Can Build a Title Team After Anthony Davis Overpay

Rival executives have their doubts. And the Davis trade—which cost the Lakers their two best young players and effectively four of their next six first-round picks—simply underscored those doubts.

It might be, as The Ringer's Bill Simmons asserted on his podcast, the best haul ever received for a traded star.

"Lakers overpaid by a significant margin, given the conditions," one longtime team executive said.

Yes, they mortgaged their future for one old man and a big guy who is often injured and has proven he can't win by himself.

Conley to Utah - Sources -- Conley sent to Jazz for 3 players, picks

The Memphis Grizzlies have traded guard Mike Conley to the Utah Jazz for Grayson Allen, Kyle Korver and Jae Crowder, the 23rd pick in Thursday's draft and a future first-round pick, league sources told ESPN.

The Jazz will send a protected 2020 first-round pick to the Grizzlies, league sources told ESPN. That pick will convey as a late lottery pick in 2020 or 2021, or become a lightly protected pick from 2022 to '24. The deal will be complete on July 6.

I think this is a good trade for both clubs. It's certainly a better trade than the AD to LA trade.

Memphis now has the #2 and #23 picks in the first round of this year's draft with which they will most likely take Conley's replacement in Ja Morant and drop Conley's hefty salary in the process. They get a better than average SF in Crowder, a relative unknown in Allen, at least in terms of whether he can play at the next level (personally, I don't think he can), and the sharpshooting Korver, who they may just buy out so he can go to LA to join LBJ again.

Utah now has arguably the best back court in basketball, minus a healthy GS back court. And with Gobert and Favors, they have a pretty good front court as well.

All-in-all, I'd say both teams benefited from this trade and Utah will be an exciting team to watch next year. Memphis I believe will be an improved ball club if Morant can stay healthy.

Surprise move, IMO. I expected the Jazz to reach into free agency for a PG.

Hard not to be pleased with the Hawks draft. I would've preferred Brandon Clarke to Cam Reddish, but there's no doubt Reddish has some pretty high potential. Trae Young, Kevin Huerter, Cam Reddish, Deandre Hunter, and John Collins has to be one of if not the best group of really young talent in the league.

Leonard spending a lot of time in Toronto and around the area here with his girlfriend, daughter and extended family. For someone who apparently can't wait to get back home to California, he's taking his time doing so. Who knows what it definitively means, but it seems to me like a good sign that he's staying in the city until free agency starts and perhaps trying to convince his extended family that Toronto and the area would be a great place to spend the next few years.

Whatever he chooses, he'll always hold a special place in the hearts of Toronto's and Canada's sports fans.

Probably not.
I don't see him being THAT much better than Harden and Durant at pure scoring. It's hard to say that he would be better for certain.

With the new no-touch D rules and small-ball defenders, Jordan would have flown to the hoop and dunked on every play, probably with an "and one" free throw attached.

Yeah, these days are long gone. I miss the physical play of the 80's.

Leonard to the Clippers does sound compelling. Think about it. What team outside of Cleveland spells "can't win the big one" like that other team from Los Angeles?

And, with "the King" now playing for that city's darling, winning one for the Clips has grown even more valuable. It'll be even bigger than the White Sox winning the World Series a decade before the Cubs.

How the Clippers can make their anti-pitch to Kawhi Leonard

The Logo is now with the Clips.

I agree. With Sterling now gone and Ballmer in charge of the team, coupled with the nutty Buss family still running the Lakers, it's a foregone conclusion. I guess, too, it would be fitting for the Diva to be a Laker while the quiet, nose to the grindstone guy plays for the Clippers.

Both Toronto and the Clippers look to be upstanding organizations. My take is the owner in LA is a little too personally involved. Ballmer is kind of a West Coast version of Mark Cuban, IMO. That might chase Kawhi away. Or, it might not.

I've got nothing solid to base it on, but my biased view is that Leonard, if not signing the max 5 year deal with the Raptors will at least sign a one or two year big dollar contract with them so that he can be part of an attempt to repeat as champion. That's pretty alluring for a guy who is all about putting in the work to win. There will be no major threat in the west, in my view, and each of the other top four teams in the east last year have significant free agency and other issues that will potentially weaken all of them with the exception of the Raptors if Leonard stays. I'm guessing he signs a two year deal worth upwards of $90 million with a player opt out option in year two in case the Raptors don't repeat and he wants to then go home. He's still young and still could command a serious free agency contract if he plays another year in Toronto. Other benefit to the Raptors is they can offer him $190+ million over 5 years and that sets up him and his young family for life anywhere he wants to spend the rest of it. He had a front row seat watching Thompson and Durant jeopardize their free agency value suffering serious injuries. You can always travel home but you don't have to work there. Working is miserable if the situation doesn't make you happy and by all accounts he had a great time in Toronto. Would he have a similar outcome with the Clippers?

I'd stay in T-town. But, then again, I like Toronto way better than LA. I can at least walk the streets at night in Toronto. :)

The next 3-10 days are going to be crazy. I'm hoping my Pacers land Rubio and keep Bogdanović. With a healthy Oladipo back, they would be a much improved team.

My buddy here at work is from IU; big fan of all things Indiana. He said Victor may be out most of next year.

I would expect him back around Dec/Jan. And tell your friend that IU sucks, lol. Boiler up!
