USA claim biggest ever Womens World Cup win

They were not and are not supposed to act like ladies. They are supposed to act like athletes. That is what they did.

According to reports, they went out of their way to humiliate the other team. Is that how athletes are supposed to act? Aren't they supposed to be gracious winners?

Is there some scenario, tie-breaking in standings or something, where goals for and against factor in?

edit- just read a link in the thread and that's how it is. If two teams are tied in the group standings goal differential is the first tie-breaker, so the American women were right to run up the score. As for the possibility that Thailand just gave up, well, that might be a bonus for the American women in a tie scenario but doesn't change the fact that they had to put as many goals on the scoresheet as they could.

Exactly, that is why you poor it on. We won our Division as both top teams were 10-1-0

10 wins
1 Tie
0 Losses

The tie was against that other team. We won the title because we scored far more goals over the season.

According to reports written by uninformed non-athletes... you score in case of a tied record in the standings.

It's more gracious to continue to play your best than to sub all the starters and ease off the throttle. Had they sat all their best players in the second half, how do you suppose the Thai players would have felt? They went to the World Cup wanting to play against the best in the world. That's sportsmanship as understood by sportsmen/women, different from how parents of children understand it.
Besides, if they had backed off and finished, say, 6-nil and Sweden had poured it on beating Thailand 10-1 and the US and Sweden finished the round robin even in points, the tie-breaker would have gone to Sweden. The USA would have made a big mistake.

The pub team i play in would have beaten that Thai team.

I read that some people are aghast at the attitude of the American team.

It seems that they and even the fans rubbed their victories in the nose of the Thai team members.

The Thai team members were in tears, I hear.

I could not care less about sports.

But I thought that the goal of sports (at least amateur) is to display good sportsmanship.

Well, considering how some Americans were such bad sports in the 2016 election, I guess I should not be that surprised that a group of American young women failed to act like ladies.

Boo hoo. Thailand doesn't want to see such celebrating? Then maybe they should learn to not let the other team score.

Score as many goals as you can in a tournament like this. It’s important, however there is celebrating and then there is that.
No need to behave the way they did.

Some people feel that the American ladies should have been more gracious and generous and just plain kind toward the Thai ladies.

Apparently, you disagree. Of course, it is not my place to criticize you for your attitude.

Have a nice day!

USA 13-0 Thailand: United States claim biggest ever Women's World Cup win - BBC Sport

Pretty impressive... BUT.

Couple of things before I say what I'm about to say.

1. I could be absolutely and totally wrong and talking crap.

2. I know nothing about Thai womens team, don't know their previous performances and how they came to be in the world cup.

3. Some of USA's goals were absolute gems and it would be hard for any goalkeeper to get to some of those.

Having said all that, something just does not seem right about Thailands performance and in a couple of those instances, the behavior of some of the defenders and the goalkeeper defies basic football logic... My gut feeling on a couple of those goals makes me feel like, maybe they threw the game, to me this looks like a possible case of match fixing, perhaps Thailand really was that inept but there's a couple of instances there that just look like intentional negligence.

I could be completely out of my depth saying something like that, but watch it for yourself and let me know if you think I'm totally wrong or if you think there may be something to my claim.

Thailand couldn't throw the game. The US are one of the best teams in the world.

It's funny because Thailand battered Laos 14-1 in 2012 and it didn't go around the world and this isn't actually their biggest defeat either, that was 15-0 against North Korea.

Thailand finished 3rd in a group of 4 in the last world cup, beating the Ivory Coast and losing to Norway and Germany 4-0 both times.

Really, the Thai team are good for their region, they thumped Indonesia 13-0 last year, beat Malaysia, Myanmar, East-Timor, Cambodia 11-0, etc, but when they play the teams with professional players, they're not good.

Really though, who has sympathy for a team that has won 11-0 and 13-0 within the last 13 months?

Thailand would have thumped the US, were they capable. They won 13-0 a little more than a year ago.

But couldn't the American ladies after their win have gone over to the Thai ladies and congratulated them on a hard-fought match? And passed out tissues to the crying Thai ladies?

I have read that there are occasionally sports games in the States between children where the parents get into fisticuffs with the parents of the opposing team.

Something is terribly wrong -- and pathetic.

I heard that some of the US players did just that.

You are 100% right: I am an uninformed non-athlete.

I am simply commenting on a report that I read on the Daily Mail website.

The report said that many people were STUNNED by the blatant lack of humility of the American ladies, which left the Thai ladies in tears.

This is not my idea of "good sportsmanship." But then again, I did not see good sportsmanship displayed in our 2016 elections, either.

Thanks for your comments & link.

I did not watch the game. I could not care less about any sport.

What got my attention was the leading article on the Daily Mail website.

And later that morning, even one local news broadcast said that the behavior of the American ladies had raised some "controversy."

If you say that criticism of the ladies is based on "lies," I will have to believe you.

Actually, I hope that you are right.

Reducing the other team to tears on purpose would have been very cruel.

Have a nice day!

I think you are imagining something that isn't there.

Number 1 was playing number 34 and it got out of hand.

This is not a game in the church league for 2nd Graders. It's the World Cup.

Lacking a mercy rule, both teams are tasked to play the best they can until the game ends.

There's absolutely nothing impressive about this.

Its an unwritten rule in soccer to stop celebrating after you are up 7-0 or 8-0. Not only did they break that rule, their celebrations at 10-0 and beyond were completely outlandish and unnecessary. This will come to bit them in the ass later in the tournament when they start facing better opposition.

Karma is a bitch

I was referring to the writers... I was a competitive State Champion athlete and even on into college... it is about winning first and when you are that much better there is not much you can do about it. I coach our girl's varsity soccer team now and we actually won a game two weeks ago 17-0. at 8-0 I took all our best players off, moved our forwards to defense and our defenders to forwards... I took out our goalie and put in a random girl that volunteered... I told them to not worry about shooting goals and to practice passing, etc. We still scored 9 more goals. What is a team that much better supposed to do? Just stand there?

I do agree about the celebrating... that is not cool. In my post above this one when we were still scoring I told our girls to not celebrate and to just calmly walk back to midfield. After a while the other team started joking about how bad they were and my girls and them start laughing and having a good time chatting, etc... but we still kept scoring, they were that bad.

The celebrating was a bit over the top, agreed, but to continue scoring goals was not. This is in FIFA, IMO. The US Team is the best in the world and has been dominant for the last decade and a half. MY beloved Canadian women's team is ranked 5th, but I got a feeling they are sneaky good this year. ON another note, is it me, or does anyone else prefer women's soccer over men's soccer? They don't act like babies, they're generally good to each other, and play hard. No whining, no flopping around the pitch when barely touched. The Men's game has gotten so distasteful to me that I actually prefer to watch the girls play! And this is coming from a guy who played for 22 years. I was scouted by Man U when I was 11 while living in Partington, UK. My parents divorced and my Mom moved us all back to Canada, and at that time 1979 soccer wasn't even a thing in Canada, so my dreams dashed.. LOL, Yeah I'm still not over it, can ya tell... :)

Tim-

Women's soccer is ridiculously better than men's soccer. The skill level is just as good, they are perhaps a tad slower and their shots are not as powerful or crazy good, but they try much harder and they don't ever flop and act like ****ing cry babies like the men do. I see a guy flying to the ground when they barely get touched and then they roll around on the ground like they were shot with a shotgun screaming and writhing in pain... it is disgraceful and stupid. I immediately change the channel, if I was not already thinking of it in the first place. Plus, the women are freaking athletic and beautiful.

They are talented and it’s fun to watch but let’s not get carried away.
It’s also not a tad slower it’s like comparing an F16 to a helicopter.
