Sadly for him and his family he only lived to the age of 70. But his health had been an issue for who knows how long. Maybe to a degree still the result of his crash at the Nurburgring in Germany when he crashed his Ferrari F1 car and escaped death but with horrendous burn injuries.

He not only survived his burns but raced again and won several titles. He was also busy in aviation before he returned to Formula one and in the past few years he was working with the Mercedes team.

Over the past decades he had to receive 2 kidney transplants, one from his brother in 1997 and by his girlfriend in 2005. In August last year he had to undergo a lung transplant due to serious lung disease and he never really recovered and never returned to his job at Mercedes.

I hope they will give him the honor a man of his stature in F1 deserves at this weeks F1 race in Monaco.

Darned, I got his first name right but flubbed on his last name, it is of course Lauda, not Laude :doh

Also the founder of Lauda Airlines.

I was just about to get to bed and see this. :(

R.I.P. Niki Lauda. I've been a Hamilton fan for years so I enjoyed watching Lauda's relationship and interviews in his role at Mercedes. Always blunt, honest and ruthlessly direct - he said it as it was, there's no politician in the way he apportioned blame even when his drivers hit drivers from other teams.

Sad day, I was originally a Hunt (the shunt) fan but grew a new found respect for Niki in later life.

Definitely one of my favorite racers back in the day. RIP.

I always enjoyed his commentary for RTL. Despite his public profile, he seemed to be a private guy.

R.I.P.
