Major League Baseball 2019

We heard ‘sure, but what happens when the Cubs get to real starting pitchers’.

Now we know.

Q and Hamels aren’t bad in the #4 and #5 slots. Dodgers have 6 good starters. They’re the team to beat, imho.

Their fans seem to travel well, tonight in DC. Now there’s a dysfunctional team, the Nats.

Didn't the Nationals GM trade for reinforcements in the bullpen?

When was the last time the Nationals developed a really good starter or relief pitcher from the minor leagues? All their good pitchers were FA signings or trades.

IMO the Dodgers are the team to beat. The Cubs should be looking at the wildcard spot. I could see the Brewers soaring especially if they land Marcus Stroman from the Blue jays.

Nats’ pen was terrible tonight. With FA Aníbal Sánchez down, they’ll probably go with Fedde/Ross. Nats have never really had chemistry.

Slick pickup for K. Morales. NYY hasn’t announced Sunday yet from what I’ve seen. I’m guessing Loaisiga. Nice matchup tomorrow with Snell/Tanaka. Lester/Strasburg also.

Gio G. has given the Brew Crew 4 decent starts. Nelson is still out for the Brewers and Chacin got bombed by the Braves tonight.

Gio really looks diminutive in person. Hard to believe no team needs Keuchel, though Mikey has done well for the Astros. They’re probably the most solid team in the AL.

Looks like another year when it looked like the NL East was going to be a beast, but instead is the 'least'..

The pitching in the NL East has been 'disappointing', and I'm being kind. Philly is the best, and they're 10th in the MLB.. For a division that was suppose to be loaded with pitching, that hasn't been true so far.

Man the Nats bullpen sucks. I thought the Mets had problems. What a disaster. I hate to say it but injuries to Cano & Nimmo could be what they need.

Gleyber Torres is the Orioles killer!

20-41 this year with 10 hrs! He is slugging 1.184!!!!

Yep, with starters going only 5-6 innings the BP is no longer an afterthought for any baseball team.

But both the Mets and the Nats spent money to improve their BP's, but so far both teams(especially the Nats) BP's have sucked.

Nats manager Dave Martinez may be fired soon. Boswell's latest column turned against him.

[h=3]Dave Martinez is a good man. But he probably shouldn’t be managing the Nationals.[/h]
It wouldn’t feel pleasant to fire the Washington Nationals manager. But it’s starting to feel necessary.

You made the claim. I showed it was false. Take your loss like a man and move on.

1 pitcher and it is even debatable. The Nationals probably misused SS several times.

Wow. Starters pitched well.. Then the Mets BP came in an immediately coughed up the lead, then the Nats BP gave the lead and the game right back to the Mets.

It was a sad display by both teams BP. Unless their BP's do a miraculous turn around neither team will do a thing this year. They'll both be under . 500 and battling for 3rd place.

Sad

The difference is the Mets have a real closer. Diaz is really good in spite of the homers he gave up to the Reds. That said we probably get swept by the Tigers. LOL! Still not worse than the way the Nats lost. Great lineup for the lefty tomorrow. The only lefty hitter will be Noah.

You only asked for one. Game over.

Lol. I didn't realize this was a game.

Let me re-phrase my statement: The Nationals do not do a good job in developing young pitchers. Compare the Nationals with the Oakland Athletics.

The A's developed Sean Doolittle in an all-star caliber closer. They traded him to the Nationals for Blake Treinen, a pitcher that was mediocre with the Nationals. Treinen is now an elite closer with Oakland and more highly regarded than Doolittle.

Felipe Vazquez, same story with the Pirates.

Checkmate.

Treinen was well-liked in Washington but could not control his nerves in high leverage situations. Glad to see he outgrew that. Doolittle was obviously good value in return.
Nats knew exactly how good Vazquez would be (Boswell wrote about it), but needed to trade for Melancon after Storen was injured and Papelbon was suspended.
Nats often develop young pitchers and trade them for other pieces. Ian Krol, Lucas Giolito and Robbie Ray come to mind.
Erick Fedde was drafted by the Nats and is now in the rotation.
In 2014 Nats acquired Joe Ross from the Padres (along with Trea Turner) and he was a sound fifth starter until he needed TJ surgery. Now finding his way back into a role.
