Major League Baseball 2019

I just auto-tuned my TV tuner/Box for ESPN at 5:30am Wednesday morning.

How pitiful and desperate for baseball am I? 5:30 in the morning to watch the A's and Mariners? My God!!!!

Mike Trout is signing a 12 year, $430 million extension with the Angels. Wow!

Bryce Harper is the most unhappy guy in the MLB today.

His 'record' contract last what? a week?

He always said he assumed Trout would get more. There was one story that he stretched out his own contract (thus lowering the annual value) to help the Phillies gather the money to make a giant offer to Trout when the time came. I think it's a reasonable inference the Angels acted so quickly because they knew the Phillies would be serious bidders.

Serious bidders in 2 years?? I doubt that.

It’s probably Scott Boras who is the unhappy one today.

Why?

He didn’t represent Trout.

And he just saw his prospects for future big contracts increase, since whatever clients he has next year won’t be shelling out Trout money.

Interesting baseball history here.

The infamous Black Sox scandal in 1919 is well known (although the movie is completely inaccurate in a lot of major ways), but gambling in baseball was rampant before 1919.

Here’s a story showing that Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, Smoky Joe Wood, and Dutch Leonard conspired to throw the last game of the season between Cleveland and Detroit in 1919.

It actually led to the firing of Ty Cobb as player manager of the Tigers, and he was traded to the A’s to finish his career.

Apparently, there’s a lot more corruption that is now forever buried, including rumors of prior World Series being thrown- possibly in 1906 when the weak White Sox beat the Cubs.

Cobb & Speaker & Landis. Closing the Books. – 1927: The Diary of Myles Thomas

Interesting. Thanks. Gotta love Landis.

Baseball is for brainless gourds.
