Major League Baseball 2019

Rumor is Bryce Harper 10-years $310 million with the Phillies and Manny Machado is 8-years $240 years with the Padres.

I would guess Harper accepts that deal.

Machado should punt elsewhere.

Good luck to both. SD has a tsunami of young talent about to hit MLB in the next two years.

Analytics are pretty clear that most FA's aren't worth it.

[h=1]MLBPA's Clark: Some teams don't justify tickets[/h]Players' union head Tony Clark criticized baseball commissioner Rob Manfred for blaming players' demands for the slow free agent market and said an increasing number of teams make little effort to justify the price of a ticket.

I don't care if Babe Ruth comes back, NO ONE is worth 9-10 year deals. It's become obvious that both Manny and Harper have baggage, if any team signs either 1 to a 10 year deal, that team is nuts. 10 years of guaranteed money? No way!!!

Padres sign Machado for 10 years 300 million.

At least the Padres are relevant now.

Now it definitely sounds like he was a BIG problem. This Vet specifically points out the other 24 can't be expected to play fundamental baseball when Harper wasn't. Sounds like he was a leader AND a problem.

This Boswell chat transcript includes a lengthy discussion of just this topic. I think you'll find it interesting.

[h=1]Possible ripple effects of Machado's deal for Bryce and baseball[/h]Not only could Manny Machado's $300 million pact increase the price tag for Bryce Harper, it also could lead to even heftier free-agent hauls for Mookie Betts and Mike Trout in two years.

Supposedly the White Sox offered Manny a better deal, but he choose Southern California. After playing in Baltimore and L.A... Maybe he took the S. Cali. weather over the Chicago weather.

People already have Trout in Philly in 2 years because he's from the area.

Point is there are other variables, money is obviously #1.. But if Harper wants to go to a winner', that might make him take a few $'s less.

I read this morning that Padres have enough $$ that they could also sign Harper.

They're not going to win for at least 2-3 years though. They have a very young team, and they have no pitching. They're not going to win for awhile..

Does Harper want to wait?

I think he would rather live in SD than in Philly.

Oh yeah.. IIRC many say SD has the best climate in the whole country.

But still, if he wants to win now, or soon, Philly is a better choice.

But SD may sit him down, tell him all about the great SD weather, and how they will use all their prospects(word is they have the #1 farm system in baseball) to get top notch pitching. And offer Harper $300 mil too.. That's 3 really big contracts though. $80 mil a year for 3 position players? IDK..

I’m pretty sure Climate plays little to no role in his decision.

These guys play 80 games at home- probably have 20 off days.

The rest of their time is spent on the road, at Spring Training or home- and I think he lives in Las Vegas, where he grew up.

White Sox offered $275 mil for 8 years. With incentives, $350 mil..

That's a lot more than SD.. Something made a difference..

The Phillies will pay $326 mil? Or some other mystery team?

I suspect Philly already has that on the table. Two things possibly holding signing back:
1. Philly is not his preferred destination.
2. Boras wants to wait until Machado has actually signed, so his agent can't turn around and try to one-up the deal.

Phillies will be better than the Nationals, Mets, and Braves within 2 years.
