Link - Lewis Hamilton can win 5th title in Austin, Texas.

Lewis Hamilton could this weekend become only the third driver to win 5 World Driver's championships to stand alongside Manuel Fangio (5 WDC) and Michael Schumacher (7 WDC) if he wins in Austin, Texas on Sunday.

Can drivers across eras be compared? I think no, the technology is too different and the cars too. I don't believe you could pick a Jim Clark and put him into a modern F1 car with all the electronic devices and expect him to cope. Equally, without knowing what the tech could be in 50 years time, I doubt you could put Lewis Hamilton into an F1 car of the era 2068 and whatever technology it uses and expect him to cope.

What can be compared though is the driver's standing and achievements against his rivals and in any equalising conditions - Hamilton is not the best ever in the rain but he's among the best. He is however probably the fastest qualifier and has the highest number of pole laps which have been achieved in a range of cars including cars slower than the competition that year.

Not bad for a boy from a council estate in Stevenage who's father had to work two jobs to help him start.
