Prospects tournament starts tomorrow, and training camps right after. I am ready for hockey!

After last year's excitement--Vegas, anyone?--I imagine this year will be a huge disappointment.

Pacioretty to Vegas, for Tatar, a prospect and a second round pick.

Steve Yzerman is reportedly stepping down as Tampa GM, moving into an advisory role for the last year on his contract. Could this mean a possible return to Detroit? Oh, I hope so...

He's definitely a Red Wing.

And another big trade this preseason:

The San Jose Sharks missed out on several of their trade targets this offseason, but will come out with arguably the best available player. Ottawa Senators captain and superstar defenseman Erik Karlsson has been traded to the Sharks. In exchange the Senators will receive a 2020 first-round pick, a 2019 second-round pick, Chris Tierney, Josh Norris, Rudolfs Balcers and Dylan DeMelo. The Senators will also receive a 2021 second-round pick if Karlsson re-signs with the Sharks and an additional first-round pick no later than 2022 if the Sharks trade Karlsson back to an Eastern Conference team. That 2021 second would also upgrade to a first if San Jose reaches the Stanley Cup Final next season. Francis Perron will also be going to the Sharks with Karlsson.

I’m hoping for the opposite of a huge disappointment. If we get some very cold stretches up here, I’m hoping for more outdoor skating beyond the increasing number of skating rinks, great for the economy.

I prefer the positive start to this thread by Redress. Sports is one of our few reliefs from the daily grind for folks. The Blackhawks lost Stan ‘The Man’ over the off-season. He was the very essence of a man’s man.

The people I’ve met and stayed with over the last six decades are by far the best part of sports at all levels, the truest gift, life-long friends.

Pre-season hockey on TV, life is good.

Good luck to all who have a rooting interest in the NHL season. Prospects have never looked better in Leaf Land, and I remember the last Stanley Cup win in '67. Leafs have never had this much talent on a team, even the Stanley Cup winners of old. They look like they'll be able to score at will and with a favourable opening schedule, should get off to a great start.

Enjoy the season and have fun.

Canada teams to watch Leafs, Jets and maybe Canadians.

West Coast: LA and SJ Sharks

East Coast: Washington & Penns

Midwest: Blues & Blue Jackets

South: Preds & Stars

Surprise teams: Coyotes Up; Golden Knights down.

Warning: Don't call your bookie.

Season starts tonight, but Washington will be without Tom Wilson:

20 games is unreal, but hard to argue with the logic. Hits like that do need to go, and it will take a few more suspensions like this to do it. To quote from the video at the link:

In short, including preseason and postseason games played, this is Wilson’s fourth suspension in his last 105 games—an unprecedented frequency of suspensions in the history of the Department of Player Safety.

Looked like a good hit to me

He made contact on the hit with the head first and primarily. That is a huge nono, as it tends to lead to injury and can end careers.

Because the other guy had his head down. This "targeting" nonsense has already hurt football. If its fully intentional then go ahead and suspend him but it looked like an incidental part of the hit.

No, that is not why. Had he skated about a foot to the left, he would have made contact with the body and no problem. He chose, fully aware of what he was doing, to make the hit to the head.

"We watched a video from the league saying what hits are good and which ones aren't. They showed some hits that were way worse than that ... maybe not in force, but as it regards to the head, that were so-called 'allowed.' I guess he just has a different rule book, and I think it's garbage, honestly."

Tom Wilson's Washington Capitals teammates not happy about suspension

Didn't the Caps JUST win the Stanley Cup like 2 weeks ago? WTH? Is the hockey season now 11 months long? My Lord!!

Blackhawks just started their season with an unprecedented three straight games going into overtime.

But they ended their streak of 44 straight wins when both Kane and Toews score together in a game..

Either way, it’s gonna be a mediocre season, especially given Crawford is still AWOL.

Showed a number of Scott Stevens' hits on TV the other night in relation to the Wilson suspension. It's a miracle Stevens didn't kill someone during his time and pretty much every one of his hits was considered legal and fair play and today they'd result in lengthy suspensions. Stevens is a hall of famer largely because of those hits. Times have definitely changed and it's not that bad a thing, in my view.

It is not in the interest of the NHL, nor the teams, to have their big stars dropping to severe concussions. They will still happen, but when they can limit them and teach players to limit them, then yes, they need to change the game, you are right. Hockey is still a physical game, there will still be big hits. Fighting is still going to be around. But without the skilled guys making the exciting plays, the NHL won't be successful, so the league needs to do what it can to protect those players.

And on a completely unrelated note: how excited are you for your Leafs this year?

I was more excited for the Leafs before the season started than I am at this point in time. Hope this first week isn't indicative of the style of play we're going to see all year. The game last night in Chicago was a joke, even though it was our backup goalie's first NHL game in a couple of years and they won. If they play like that all year, they'll have to be like the 80's Oilers to have success.

On paper, the Leafs have far superior talent to Montreal, Ottawa, and Chicago and yet they're 2-1, one overtime win, and 13 goals for/13 goals against. Average over 4 goals a game against over a season and they'll have trouble. But still, even on the blueline, a lot of very young talent that hopefully will get better as the year goes on. Best group of centers in the league and best talent through three lines in the league making it hard for opposing teams to match lines but still very much a work in progress.

Nylander seems to be getting bad advice, sitting out and demanding a long term deal at a rumoured $8 mil per, far above what the market would say he's worth. If and when he gets back, they'll have even more scoring power. But they may get to the point where they shop him around for defensive help. He'd better sign something, somewhere soon or he's going to screw up his year - tough to catch up when you start late.

Too early to tell for sure, but it certainly appears as if my hopes for Phoenix this year were false. The Coyotes suck.

Only a guess, but I think the "braintrust", such as it is in Phoenix, are hoping they will be able to pry Austen Matthews away from the Leafs sometime down the road and bring the hometown hero/savior as their start to relevancy. Matthews seems to love playing in Toronto, but who knows how long that will last. Tavares coming home to Toronto on a long term deal, to help Toronto win a Cup after a long drought, may leave an impression on Matthews in years to come - even more so if Toronto does win a Cup and then Matthews can go home a victor. But then,, the Coyotes may be playing in another city other than Phoenix by the time that happens.

I am a big wild fan, unfortunately I don't have cable or satellite and get very little news.

I'm from Minnesota but now live in Wisconsin, I could not believe the difference when I crossed the border. Where I came from kids were considered weird if they could not skate, on this side of the river kids had hardly heard of skating.

I try to keep up with the wild on the internet and will from time to time go 10 miles to the local tavern (where I am affectionately known as the "hockey guy") and watch big games.

Wow I miss the NHL ticket, now i have to live through the net...
