2018-2019 NHL Hockey Thread

New Jersey, like everyone else.

Srsly tho, NJ is going to be a ton of fun to watch for awhile, right up till the salary cap destroys them.

In college we would go to the Brendan Byrne arena and catch a Devils game. Great seats as no one was there. Usually left early and hit the Meadowlands race track. They should be relevant again.

The Game felt a lot closer than the score. So many shots on goal by the Bruins with no payoff. The Blues were getting outshot almost 3 to 1 at one point...and had a 2 goal lead.

I'm glad it was a decisive game 7. It even helped my buddy from New Hampshire handle the loss a lot better than a close loss would have.

I don't think I've ever seen a bigger difference between what happened on the scoreboard and what happened on the rest of the ice than in the first period. Congrats to the Blues!

Binnington.

Should have been rookie of the year, and MVP of the playoffs.

Pettersson had a great year, but without Binnington the Blues would likely have missed the playoffs.

Binnington is amazing, and without him the Blues would not have made the playoffs or one the cup. However, I do think O'Reilly deserved the Conn Smythe. As good as Binnington was, especially in games after a loss, his overall playoff numbers weren't elite and he also put up several stinkers throughout the playoffs.

Don't get me wrong, I'm very excited to have him on my team and his nerves of steel in those big games were great. But he just wasn't the best player overall throughout the playoffs.

O’Reilly was a beast, and scored some timely goals. I’d still go with Binnington.

It was an inspirational turnaround for the Blues. I’m happy they won.

Looking forward to next season already.

PS. Had summer ice yesterday... 90 outside... great ice inside :)

So where is Mitch Marner going? Seems the Isles are interested.

Personally, I love Mitch Marner as a player and just as much as a person - he seems like a terrific young guy and ever positive. That said, if he and his management group go out and get some team to sign an offer sheet that is greater than $10 mil over five or more years, I'd say let him walk and take the draft picks. As some smart person said recently, before he signed back with San Jose - don't remember who - would the Leafs trade Marner for Erik Karlson and 4 first round draft picks and the answer would be a resounding yes. So, if you let Marner walk, you immediately free up $10 plus million annually to sign other free agents, and quite a few nice ones on the market this year, and you get 4 first round draft picks. Is Marner a really good player, yes - is he Conner McDavid good, hell no - is he expendable, I'd say yes if the price is too high.

Marner had 94 points last year, mostly assists, and mostly on the end of one of Tavares's career high 47 goals. Marner is also very durable and seldom misses time - in fact, I can't remember a time when he missed a game injured. But the Leafs are ready to let 60 plus points walk out the door with Jake Gardner leaving on defense, and their defense is a weak area for them and they're likely to be relying on one or two minor league defensemen moving up next year. They've also got a ton of young forward talent in the minors and no place to play them. They could also trade Kadri's $4.5 mil to free up cap space and not really miss a beat. Lots can be done, just a matter of if the Leafs' management - same ownership as the Raptors - have the balls to make the big, risky move, and move away from what isn't winning and take a chance.

And by the way, since Lou was so enamoured with Zaitsev that he gave him a stupid long term big money deal, maybe you could let him know that he's asked to be traded and maybe Lou should pick him up.

Just wanted to post a reminder that a few years back, when Montreal signed P K Subban to that long term $9.5 mil per contract I said they'd live to regret it while others said it was a great deal and Subban would be in Montreal for life. Well, now Subban has been traded by two teams under that contract, from Montreal to Nashville and now Nashville to the Devils. Somebody truly valuable enough to merit such a massive contract, who's never asked for a trade, doesn't get traded away by one team let alone two teams. As I said at the time, he wasn't worth the money then and he's still not worth the money now even 4/5 years later. Nice guy, super person, average defenseman, salary cap dead weight.

The odds of an offer sheet are painfully low. Ain't no one taking a chance of giving up 2 first round picks.

This is the second time a team has wanted Subban enough to give up something to get him. Both team felt he was worth the salary.

Marner isn't signing an offer sheet that is worth less than $10.5 per annum average and such an offer sheet would cost the team 4 first round picks, not just 2, which makes it unlikely he gets one. No player. other than McDavid, would get such an offer under the current rules. Only teams with that much cap space would be lower third in the standings and the draft picks would be too high a price to pay.

As for Subban, Nashville thought he was worth more than Weber at Weber's age and remaining term - they traded one bad contract for another. As for NJ taking a flyer on the salary dump that Nashville played, they had the cap space and Subban is a serviceable commodity but nowhere near full value for $9.5 a year. In neither case did the team that got Subban seek out Subban.

Leave it to the Habs to do an offer sheet, and **** it all up. Carolina is coming out ahead either way, and the contract is for just about his market value, so Carolina will almost certainly sign it.

So what do you think of Toronto's big trade today?

Panarin to NY.

Duschene to Preds.

Bobrovsky to Florida.

Ouch for Columbus, but Kekelainen seems like a really shrewd operator. He’s got cash to burn... will be interesting to see how their roster pans out. Hope Hannikainen gets regular ice on the 4th line.

Watch out for Florida next year. They had a good goalie come in near the end of the season, but now they have a great coach, and some great talent, including the most underrated player in the league... Barkov. The guy simply has incredible skill and is a solid 2-way, 200ft player.

With the kid who came in at the end of the season and Bobrovsky, if they play close to expectations... they’ll be tough.

Thumbs up, and I really like PK... but not at 9.5 per year.

Pawelksi and Perry to Dallas.

They’re gonna be tough.

Will take some time to evaluate, both trades. It appears, on face value, that they improved their defense without jeopardizing too much on the offensive end. Kadri lost his role as an offensive center when the Leafs signed Tavares and as largely a defensive player, his offensive numbers plummeted and he became a little too reckless. Going to Colorado in a more offensive role could be a great career boost for him. I wish him well there. Could be another Leaf player traded to a soon to be Stanley Cup winner. The defensemen the Leafs got aren't considered really strong defensive zone lockdown players, but Ceci has the potential to turn his career around here in Toronto after a rough couple of years in Ottawa where he was becoming a scapegoat for a bad team.

This off season for the Leafs could be a success if they don't overpay for Marner. Seeing the offer sheet for Aho, with the AAV salary of $8.4 mil, seems to me might tamper the demands of Marner's camp, but hard to say since I get the feeling the Marner group are trying to squeeze the Leafs from what they think is a stronger position than they really have.

Only problem I see is that the Panthers have been pegged as an up and coming team for a couple of years now and they never quite make a run - bad season starts kill them. But they should be better - but a lot of teams in the east are better making it a tough go to make the playoffs.

True. But... They’re young, talented have added great pieces.

Will be interesting.
