2018-2019 NHL Hockey Thread

Early surprises: Canes and Hawks on the good. Jets, Caps and Kings on the "gee I hope this is not how their seasons are going to go."

Solid starts from those we expected to do well: Toronto, Nashville, Boston and Anaheim.

Duds will be duds: Coyotes, Rangers and Panthers.

Blackhawks are setting all time NHL records.

First team to go to OT for their first five games.

Also, Kane, Toews and DeBrincat are on course to score 82 goals each, and each has already also had one OT goal.

Of course, their defense is nonexistent.

Flyers.

same old same old.... one or two new faces, generally no real changes :doh

Inconsistency abounds.

May or may not make the playoffs, surely will have to struggle to get in, then a quick first round exit if they make it at all.

Great start to the season by Simmonds. Obviously his long list of injuries from the end of last year have been addressed nicely.

Defense and solid goal tending has yet to show up for this year.

Unfortunate that JVR got injured so early in season, but hopefully he'll return soon and provide some spark.
Couturier has been far too invisible so far, but that's not unusual. Seems to take him a while to really get going.

Goal tending???? Sure would help to have a solid defense , but still a very questionable part of the puzzle as always for the Flyers.

Just feeling like this season will be exactly like last season.
At best, first round fodder for the number one or number two seed in the east.
If they make it at all.

We are number 1!!!!! Detroit, fewest points in the league, and only team with no wins yet!

As a Buffalo Sabres fan, who has seen a pretty awful team for the last several seasons ... yeeeeesh. The Wings are terrible this year.

It's mad early. This is an 82-game season, and they've played what, seven or so?

You can't judge an NHL team before New Year's Day unless they're supremely awful or superlatively good. The Flyers are neither.

No, they're not "on course." They're on PACE. Pace means nothing. Course implies there's an actual chance.

When the only experienced defenseman who is playing has arthritis in both knees, it is not going to go well. Rest are out with injuries. Oh, and the coach is an idiot...

Yeah, this is a rebuilding year for your doodz. Hey, you had a great few decades. Happens to everyone, especially in the cap era.

Preds fit the former, but no one is surprised that they got off to a solid.

Wings are certainly the latter. Their awful start may be the real thing too.

No. No. No.

This is the exact same team as last year, and the year before, and the year before.

Well over 200 games with the same coaches and players.

Worst penalty kill in league for years running. Collapse in box and let other team tee off. In case you're not watching, the Flyers get penalized quite a lot too.

At best this is a team capable of making playoffs, then getting eliminated first round.

They just won 3 in a row I believe. How about those Taverasless Icelanders? Take a home & home from the Pens. I have to enjoy it while I can. Although the defense and goaltending with Trotz might keep them in contention.

Been really happy with how well the Isles have done. They still need to lose, just to get that next big star, but who knows, they might make the playoffs this year. When is the new arena?

And the Wings managed to pull off a couple wins, but it won't last. Just not enough talent. Hopefully they can get some more picks by the trade deadline(Howard, Nyquist both should draw interest). Frustrating time as a Wings fan, but still, the Wings where really good for a really long time, with some of the all time greats playing for them.

Oh, and did any one watch Red Army last night? Fascinating film about the Russian hockey players.

The Leafs have kind of fallen back down to earth, which is probably not a surprise to anyone living north of Buffalo.

Pens are the surprise team so far for me. I did not think they had the youth to compete this year. I guess I was wrong...but, it's still way early.

Preds are not a surprise, and they are the team I pick to win the Cup. Go Smashville!!

On the down:

That Vegas is struggling is not a surprise either. Last year was a stars all aligning moment. This year it is expansion team blues.

Speaking of the Blues, what the **** is wrong in St Louis?

Sabres are showing flashes, like a 9-2 win followed by a 3-1 loss to the Rangers - but I think they've a good shot at the playoffs this year - I like them better than Montreal and Ottawa who are each playing better than their final record will show.

Leafs have scored ZERO goals in the first two periods of each of their last 5 home games - a dubious record - unless and until they figure out how to dominate at home they are just an also ran at this point, even with a very dominant 6-0 record on the road.

Ottawa’s no good. I can’t figure out Montreal.

They’re obviously quite a different (read: worse) team without Matthews.

The new arena will be next to Belmont Raceway. 10 - 15 minutes from the Throgsneck bridge.

No question Matthews is one of the premier players in the league, even at a young age, but the Leafs lost 3-0 to Pittsburgh at home, with Matthews and then went to Pittsburgh on Saturday and beat them 5-0 without Matthews. No easy answers, but seems they try too hard for the pretty goal at home, too many passes, and play a more solid road game.

What have you done for me lately?

Slumping Blackhawks fire coach Joel Quenneville

The Chicago Blackhawks have fired coach Joel Quenneville, the winner of three Stanley Cups in Chicago.

The team also let go assistants Kevin Dineen and Ulf Samuelsson and named Jeremy Colliton head coach. He was in his second season as coach of the team's AHL affiliate in Rockford.

FLYERS!!!!! Pay attention here!!!!

Stanley Cup winning coach without a job!!!!

Yeah, I was thinking, "Ten teams are lining up to call his agent right now."
