Poor Grigor Dimitrov-#5 seed draws former champion Stanislas Wawrinka who was not seeded due to Stanimal's injuries. In a battle of two of the best one handed backhands in history, Stanimal wins in what really wasn't a real upset.

another premier first round match up-former champions Venus Williams vs Svetlana Kuznetsova -starting shortly on ESPN

A repeat of Wimbledon day 1.

Nice to see Murray back (or rat face to Turtle) ;)

Had an early scare but he came through it and his fitness looked good.

rat boy. sadly, his hip injury, I have been told-is the same that did in the career of one of the best players of my lifetime "Guga"

I wish Laura Robson would get back to form and Johana Konta get her confidence back

Just finished watching the Shapo vs Anderson match. All I can say is...WOW. Such amazing play from both players and the crowd was so loud and awesome. Best grand slam hands down.
Looking forward to Roanic vs Wawrika. I think Roanic will take this in a close 4 sets.

Nadal didn't have an easy time either. Anderson used to be as big a choker as there was-Querey level but has changed that around. Shapo will be part of the new wave along with Zverev, Kyrgios, Tsitsipas and Thiem.

Keep an eye out for Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka. watched her rip several big time players in Cincy including Garcia, Pliskova, and Keys. Big big power. fast and tall. Grand slam winner within 4 years I suspect

Serena is giving big Sis, the butt whipping from Hell tonight. Serena's going to be tough to beat if she plays like this for the next 8 days

good call-Stanimal's fail in the first set tiebreaker was the turning point

Mac favors Isner over Milos

Isner is a damn good player and a nice guy, to boot. But Roanic is playing inspired tennis right now. Never seem him like this... Roanic in 4.

I think Milos has more talent and a better game but Isner might be a little fresher. Toss up

I'm on the Fed Express. Loyal till the end.

I don't know how anyone cannot love Roger, but damn, I just lovvvvveeeee Nadal. Even with all the quirks.

Oh yeah, Nadal is awesome too. Gutsy as. Love watching them play.

he got beat early in the punishing hard court tournaments running up to this event. He was tired since Wimbledon. I saw him play in Cincinnati, he went out in round one to "Sam I am" and lost his second match in Canada. Raonic did lose his second match to FT at Toronto but went to the quarters in tough conditions in Cincinnati (numerous rain delays high humidity). Interestingly JI skipped what is his home town tournament at Winston Salem last week

Nadal is probably my favorite-but my favorites of all time were Thomas Muster and Fernando "the Flaylin Chilean" Gonzalez. Go for broke brutal power hitters.

Back to reality for Roanic. Isner played inspired -- I hope he makes it far.

I was out coaching some students. Came into the study and my wife had left the US Open on the TV-saw Isner win the final point. That girl I picked to do well annihilated Kitova yesterday. Its rare to see someone hit her off the court. usually if PK loses its just that-she misses. this isn't the case. AS just plain blew the ball past her.

Great match between two soon to be superstars-Naomi Osaka-who won the big Indian Wells tournament (she plays for Japan, grew up in the states) took out Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka who won the premier level New Haven tournament after getting to the Semis of the even bigger Cincinnati tournament. Both are extreme power hitters-Osaka's nerves were a bit better and as the commentators noted-the match came down to 4-5 points and NO played those better

Happy Birthday Carla!! the tournament was bending over backwards to help Shriekapova-scheduling most of her matches at night (where Maria-who hates the heat) even though MS was not a top 16 seed. Shriekapova was 23-0 at night at the US Open but plucky Carla Suarez-Navarro-30 years old today, hit her off the court-winning with her beautiful and brutal one hand cross court backhand. Bravo Carla-one of the best liked players on the tour-like Nadal and Muguruza-nice to everyone, never condescending or arrogant. Next up is Madison Keys. Keys is one of my favorite players too-hard to pick one.

damn, I have seen Roger play 100 times and that was just stunning. Credit to Millman. Could have choked-he didn't. Love to see him win another match or two. Millman's response to winning showed lots of class. Glad to see this result to a good guy who the commentators say is a really good guy. Don't need if he can beat ND but it would be great if he could. its tough for guys like him to come back right after the best win of their career to repeat it

Sloan Stephens-the choke label resurfaces. Unbelievably bad today.

what a match-Rafa and Dominic. could have gone either way. I think DT outplayed him but in the end, Nadal's defense on the last point where Rafa's lob caused the error came through. awesome match. almost 5 hours. DT sure showed he's big time. DT should have won the third set. but Rafa was up love 40 on DT's serve in the final set and DT pulled it out. I've always believed Nadal is the classiest guy in tennis and his interview sort of showed it. Always gives credit to the opponent. maybe the best athlete in the world now.

Serena embarrassed herself
