College Football 2018-2019 Season

You are making that claim based on one loss? I am not an Ohio fan, however it is too early to count OSU out. If they win out the regular season and win their conference title, they will absolutely remain in the hunt for the playoffs. They were ranked number 2 before the loss.

When a team is in the cupcake phase of its schedule, losing to any one of them is unacceptable. And, they did not just lose. They got smeared.

I would not call Purdue a cupcake, but I agree this was a bad OSU loss.

After three straight losses to start the season, they have scored over 40 points in their past three games to become 4-3. So, yeah, it does appear that they are not the proverbial cupcake when facing let's say, Illinois. But, this is OSU. Everyone in the Big Ten not named Penn State and maybe Michigan or Wisconsin or (this year) Iowa is supposed to be a cupcake for them.

I can't recall when OSU last lost to Purdue--maybe back in the Jim (don't call me Chris) Everett days. Well, I guess there was that one year the Buckeyes were on suspension--they probably beat them then.

In this century, Purdue beat OSU in 2000, 2004, 2009 and 2011, prior to last night.

Not mentioned in the article, but a key point: losing Nick Bosa cut the heart right out of that D. It would be like the Bears losing Khalil Mack. I mentioned it to some die hard Buckeye fans at work on Friday. Even they had to agree, losing a guy like that did not bode well for their prospects.

2011 was the year I was thinking of--suspension year. I think they lost more than they won that year, but I am not sure of their exact record. The other three years come as a surprise, especially 2009. I thought that was one of OSU's better years.

I wasn't living in Ohio between 2000 and 2004. I was in Georgia. But, I remember that the Bucks won a title in 2002 or 3. So, a couple bad teams bookending that run makes sense.

Would not be a great shame, however two losses to conference opponents would put them out of the playoff hunt.

Yes, that's what I said next. If you read the entire exchange, I conceded this point, already, and changed to Michigan being more likely to make it than LSU.

Urban Meyer, who was suspended for 3 games after he did nothing about one of his coaches brutalizing his wife and threatening her several times, now complains his team is “undisciplined.” LOL!

When have any of Meyer’s coaches or teams been disciplined?

Hey Urban, do you want some cheese to go with that whine?

It will certainly effect their chances, however depending on how they play everyone else, it would take another loss to eliminate them completely from consideration.

They face MSU, U of M and the West's champ, should they get that far. Giving up 49 to Purdue, while scoring only 20, tells me they stand little chance of winning all three of those games.

In any case, for now, OSU has dropped to number 9 in the rankings. Bama is 1st, Clemson is back in 2nd. Notre Dame is 3rd, and Michigan is 4th.

No, LSU is 4th, Michigan is 5th in both polls. OSU has dropped to #11 (AP) and #9 (Coaches).

After this past Saturday, I a Buckeye fan not sure they deserve another chance. That was really hard to watch. Right now they are headed to the Toilet Bowl.

Greetings, Vesper. :2wave:

:agree: The player that watched the football slowly come to a halt while he watched - :thumbdown - WTH was he thinking??? And 31 first downs vs Purdue's 24 ...and they still lost big-time? :2mad:

Yep.They dropped down to about 11th in the rankings, and they are probably shot, however you never know. They were considered last year with two losses including that lopsided loss to Iowa. Depends on what all other contenders do.

Just for discussion, what would it take for UCF to get into the top 4?
Regards,
CP

They would first have to migrate out of the pee wee conference they are now in and face some real competition during the regular season. Going undefeated in a conference loaded with teams that are barely above high school level does not and should not get them in the playoffs. Last years's UCF coach is learning that the hard way in Nebraska where he started off 0 and 6.

True. UCF and USF are not the same as Alabama, Clemson, and Notre Dame, the other undefeated. There is an abyss between them.

I agree with you and Obamacarefail. Why do we insist on acting otherwise by ranking them? I think the NCAA must be making a buck somewhere on it. I will say that nobody wants to schedule either of them for Homecoming, excepting maybe, Nebraska.
