Mid-day today we'll learn if the joint bid by the US, Canada, and Mexico will secure the FIFA World Cup 2026 over Morocco. Trump has previously threatened countries that won't support our bid (on Tweeter) but then wrote three letters to FIFA indicating that the US will have no restrictions on athletes, delegations, and fans of any qualified country in terms of visas.

I'm hopeful that we'll get the WC, but I'm not sure what effect Trump's actions will have. Hopefully all that FIFA voters want is money and we are richer than Morocco so this might trump (pun intended) any other consideration by the voters.

Hopefully Morocco gets it, the last thing Canada needs is ****ing FIFA. The World Cup is nothing but a massive money drain.

The government should not be spending a dime to pay for sports except for community rinks or things like that.

Given that the US, Canada, and Mexico (even Mexico which has hosted the tournament before) do have existing infrastructure without the need to build anything, actually the Cup will have a net economic benefit. It involves literally more than a million fans coming to these countries with money to spend, in hotels, restaurants, and other entertainment venues. Also, the ticket sales do result in a large share of the profits being passed back to the host countries.

The World Cup is an economic drain when it is hosted by Third World countries like South Africa and Brazil (two recent examples) where a large number of hotels, stadiums, airports, and transit infrastructure needs to be built, and then become white elephants once the tournament is over. But for countries like Canada and the US that already have all that ready to be used by the Cup with minimum additional investment, it's actually a very good deal.

I am pretty sure they would require new facilities to be built, they need that corruption money somehow. Not to mention all the other sketchy **** they do. Then there is why should we support one of the most corrupt organizations in the world?

World Cup Report

Lots of money to make from the World Cup

Looks like its a done deal; Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. got the bid.

Hope I'm still in the states when it happens! WC always has a magical air to it.

FIFA is one of the most corrupt organizations in the world?

Go take a cold shower.

No, one of the arguments in favor of our bid is that we said we already have the facilities while Morocco only had the promise to build several stadiums. So if FIFA wanted the building part for money laundering and stuff, they would have picked Morocco.

We won the bid. It's a good thing.

It's not exactly that we'll be supporting FIFA. The World Cup would happen anyway, somewhere else. It's that FIFA is supporting us, but granting us the bid. We'll make money out of it.

I'd love to go to some matches, back in 94 I was in Chicago during a match, and in LA and in San Fran during games....all by chance, all without tickets... :(

They are, the organization functions entirely on bribes and exploiting poor or small countries.

Not exactly true... the organisation has changed quite a bit since Blatter, and the so called "poor or small countries" are actually running the organisation more and more.

As for being corrupt.. it use to be sure.. depending on how you define corrupt. Are there deals made still and favours done and expensive dinners done.. sure, thats how most business is done. Take this vote.. no doubt that political and economic favours were being thrown around to get the North American bid over the line, but then again it has been a given the US would have a part in these games since Qatar got the 2022 games... it was always to be either in Africa or North America. Since North America has not had it in over 20 years, then the chances were very good that someone there would get it. Is that corruption that FIFA have a rule on switching continents... /shrug. That would be the same as saying term limits are corruption..

But saying that, I believe FIFA really needs to kick out those fake countries.. at least their voting rights, because the core problem of certain FIFA members having far too much power (real or not) is still there.

Look at the FIFA council (as it is now called). It is more fair that it use to be, but then again it aint.

2 Oceania members are not even from countries, but a US and UK colony. One of the CONCACAF members (North America) is a British colony. As long as this crap still exists... then FIFA will remain tainted. At least they got rid of the 2 guaranteed UK spots in the Executive Committee.. err FIFA Council, but it is still not enough. I have no problems with colonies getting FIFA money, but they should not have any voting rights or power within the body.. that should be reserved for real countries only.
