Analysis
The Redskins tackled their biggest weaknesses with their draft picks
The run game was a nightmare for the Washington Redskins on both sides of the ball in 2017 and the organization didn't waste any time addressing both of those weaknesses during the NFL draft over the weekend.

Washington Redskins: Matt Flanagan

"Flanagan was not much of a receiver in his time at Pittsburgh, making just 17 catches after transferring from Rutgers. At 6-foot-5, 260-pounds, he has the size you look for in an inline -- or Y -- tight end, and he could help Houston or whatever NFL team that drafts/signs him as a blocker. Apr 14 - 2:25 PM. "After the NFL Draft concluded, Pitt players began receiving offers quickly. One of those was tight end Matt Flanagan, who is reportedly headed to the Washington Redskins, per Jerry DiPaola of the Trib. Head coach Pat Narduzzi confirmed it later with a tweet.Flanagan came to Pitt for his senior year after spending three seasons at Rutgers. He didn’t post huge numbers as the Panthers’ passing game struggled most of the season. But he did catch 17 passes for 160 yards, which were both career highs, and his 17 grabs were tied for fifth on the team.
Flanagan wasn’t expected to be selected in the draft so this is hardly a disappointment for him. Good to see that he’ll get a chance to continue his career in Washington."

Redskins will likely not keep both Tight Ends Jeremy Sprinkle and Matt Flanagan. Criticism of Jeremy Sprinkle is that he does not do a good job of creating a hole by moving a defender to the side, to create a hole. Jeremy knocks defenders FLAT on their backs many times, but that move still leaves the defender in the hole, that was supposed to be created.

So how good is Matt Flanagan at moving defenders to the side?

Redskins Tight Ends not highly ranked. Some NFL teams use 3 Tight Ends on some plays. Maybe the Redskins should keep 4 Tight Ends with Reed injury time lost, and Vernon Davis starting to lose blocking potential.

"The Washington Redskins fear guard Arie Kouandjio has a torn quadriceps — an injury that could cost him the entire season — Coach Jay Gruden confirmed Friday afternoon.

The 2015 fourth-round pick, a DeMatha alum, will need a second opinion, Gruden added.

“We haven’t gotten the official MRIs back and all that stuff,” the coach said Friday, following the Redskins’ first rookie minicamp practice. Veteran players have been at Redskins Park conducting offseason workouts. “That was the fear, but any time you have an injury like that, we’ve got to get it all checked out and make sure that what you think it is actually a fact. And, right now, we don’t know for sure.”

"The Redskins added a 12th undrafted college free agent on Friday, signing former Duke offensive tackle Takoby Cofield.

Third-year offensive lineman Xavier Nixon was also waived by the team Friday. Nixon was claimed off waivers from the Colts in February. The 6 foot 6, 330-pound tackle, originally signed by the Redskins out of Florida in 2013, had spent the past two seasons in Indianapolis, appearing in eight games and starting two.

Cofield’s addition, meantime, comes a day after the Redskins announced the signing of 11 other undrafted free agents. Listed at 6 foot 4, 310-pounds, Cofield was a third team All-ACC selection last season after starting 13 games at left tackle for the Blue Devils, who led the nation in fewest tackles for loss per game "

Like malaria, it never really goes away.

DC has been “snake-bit” sportswise for some time. About the same time Dan Snyder bought in. Baseball has been WS or bust the last few years and the last time the Caps played for Lord Stanley’s cup, they were swept in four..........always been a pessimist.

I don't care much about hockey, and my NBA allegiance is to the Indiana Pacers, but I care about the Nats and the Redskins.

Redskins offensive line is still banged up from last year.

"The Redskins agreed to terms Thursday with rookie tackle Geron Christian.

With Christian’s signing, Washington’s entire 2018 draft class is now under contract.

Christian, a third-round pick out of Louisville, had been participating in the team’s offseason program, despite not having a contract. Third round picks typically are the trickiest for teams to sign because there’s slightly more room to negotiate what the contract should be. Under the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement, rookies have a wage scale."

"The state of the Redskins offensive line, were it September, would not be in ideal shape. Starting tackles Trent Williams and Morgan Moses are both rehabbing from offseason surgeries, while backup tackles Ty Nsekhe and T.J. Clemmings are recovering from their own injuries suffered during last season. Backup guard Tyler Catalina “had a little tweak” during practice last week and is sitting out for the time being.

But it is the end of the May, in the middle of OTAs, which means head coach Jay Gruden is not concerned with the absences and limited participation from some of the starters that missed parts or most of last season with major injuries.

“The big thing is getting them healthy,” Gruden said last week. “And there’s nothing they can do about it. I mean, they’re still rehabbing from surgeries. It’s not like they’re taking time off and fishing, you know? They’re rehabbing and I have total faith in those guys and what they’re doing – the guys that are here. And I have no problem with Trent. I saw Trent squatting five- or six-hundred pounds the other day, so I think Trent is well on his way to being in good shape. So I think once camp rolls around..."

Kirk Cousins is being under-rated and is as capable of throwing anywhere on the field as any other quarterback in the league.

He does have an immediate threat of throwing underneath to take advantage of what you give him, but that is not to say he can't put it downfield.

Sad to see him get offed, but I believe he will surface somewhere else in the league and be successful.

No matter where he goes, like all quarterbacks, he will have to be protected with a good offensive line.

He never had that in D.C.!

Cousins signed an $85million+ contract with the Vikings quite some time ago.

Great, I've been very busy, and haven't kept up with the NFL- even my own hometown Cowboy team.

But, it's almost preseason and I'm trying my best just to catch back up!

If he gets the start, he will be a very good quarterback for Minnesota! Could just be what they have been missing!

And thanks!
