Redskins Offseason 2018

Here is what Dan Snyder remembers, a Billy Kilmer deep pass.

"Sometimes, Billy Kilmer's throws were of the wobbly variety, and that's putting it mildly.

But not on Dec. 31, 1972 in the NFC title game at RFK Stadium.

That day, Kilmer hoisted a 45-yard touchdown pass to Charley Taylor that took down the Dallas Cowboys. The play has to rank as one of the best throws, if not the best, of Kilmer's 16-year NFL career.

And it's certainly one of the most memorable plays in Redskins history.

Taylor hauled in touchdown catches of 15 and 45 yards from Kilmer as the Redskins beat Dallas 26-3 in the NFC title game.

It was perhaps the key game in the careers of Kilmer and Taylor, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1984.

Taylor has referred to the 45-yard touchdown pass that day from Kilmer as the quarterback's best pass ever.

The Redskins were holding onto a shaky 10-3 lead early in the fourth quarter. Dallas cornerback Mark Washington, subbing for an injured Charley Waters, was the victim on the play as Taylor slipped behind him far down the right sideline."

Flashback: Kilmer's Greatest Throw

Like the man said: even a blind hog finds an acorn every now and then. Note Snyder's reference to Billy's wobbly throws. Sonny could throw a perfect spiral 50 yards without breathing hard.

Dan Snyder is seeking a QB that will throw the long passes, lake the 45 yarder Billy Kilmer threw against the Cowboys, New Year's Eve, 1972. Check Downs for open receivers infuriates Dan Snyder. Of course,if there is an interception, then he blames the Quarterback .

I really don't think that matters to Snyder.

"Cousins is second in the NFL at 3,038 passing yards, ranking only behind Tom Brady.

He was actually 7th and passing yards are a very overrated stat. The Redskins were behind so many times/didn't run the ball enough.

He's third in the NFL in passing yards per game, again behind Brady as well as Carson Palmer (who only played five games before a season-ending injury). In fact, looking at QB stats around the NFL this season, Cousins' name is near the top of almost every key metric. (snip) Pro Football Focus ranks Cousins as the 11th best QB this season, behind players like Tyrod Taylor and Marcus Mariota. Football Outsiders, using either their DYAR or DVOA metric, also rank Cousins 11th in the league."

How many QBs are definitively better than Kirk Cousins? The list isn't that long | NBC Sports Washington

That's damn near top-10 if not within. While the QB position has more impact on the team's success than any other single position, it makes me crazy when people say things like, "He only has X wins and Y playoff appearances." Sorry, but why do people think the QB is somehow supposed to be a one-man army? There are at least 21 other guys on the team who contribute to that W/L column as well. It's neither fair nor accurate to saddle the QB with ALL the team's wins and losses. Gladiator's references even mention the lack of receiving talent on the team. Is Cousin's expected to throw AND catch the ball?

And speaking of overpriced contracts, the Redskins set themselves up for that by dragging their feet and franchise tagging him two years in a row. Back in '16 they could've locked him up for 4 years, $17m per year. Instead they tagged and paid him $24m fully guaranteed. Now the Vikes have him for $28m per year and the Skins are starting over with someone new. I can't see anything even beginning to resemble "smart" in that whole sequence.

Thanks for proving my point. All key metrics show he is not a top 10 qb yet he is deserving of being the top paid QB in the NFL?

There's no such thing as "deserving."

[h=1]Kirk Cousins' agent calls ability to land big deal 'perfect storm'[/h]The Redskins have been blamed for Kirk Cousins' departure, but his agent explains why it might have always been tough for Washington to re-sign the QB.

Vikings in the next Super Bowl? I'm not sold. As I have stated, I am a fan of Kirk Cousins, but there is always that late game miscue, strip sack or interception. I don't see A. Smith as a significant upgrade. But that's why we watch............

The three years he started, Cousins was the reason the Redskins were not 4-12.

Mediocre is as mediocre does. Tough to find a top tier QB. Look at some of the other deals. If you are correct re: Minnesota, I wager it won't be because of Kirk. Maybe I'll be here to eat crow or supply crow and seasonings?

As you wish. In Minnesota I think he'll rank among the NFL's best.

I predict the winner Alex Smith will win over the hearts and minds of the Washington D.C fans.

Kurt Cousins would have led the Skins' in salary cap hell.

I saw a graphic on espn the other day for Cousins' rankings for 2015-2017 stats (3 years with Washington). He was top 5 (3rd mostly) in passer rating, total yards, completion percentage and a couple other things.

He was actually 7th and passing yards are a very overrated stat. The Redskins were behind so many times/didn't run the ball enough.
Fair point. That article came out in the middle of the season too, when there were still plenty of stats to put up. In any case, would you agree that Cousins is at least slightly above average? Consider the crew he's had to work with, not just the raw numbers.

Thanks for proving my point. All key metrics show he is not a top 10 qb yet he is deserving of being the top paid QB in the NFL?
QBs are signing record deals because the league salary cap is at a record high. As a percentage of overall cap space, teams are not spending more on QBs than in the past. If you think Cousins is overpaid like a top QB now, just wait 'til Aaron Rodgers signs his next contract. After that, Cousins' deal with the Vikings will seem about average in comparison.

"If ambition is the mark of a franchise trending upward, then the Washington Redskins are certainly pointed in the wrong direction. No, it's not losing Kirk Cousins after three consecutive 4,000-yard seasons. Nor is it dealing promising cornerback Kendall Fuller for Alex Smith. Instead, it's the seemingly unopposed consolidation of power at the very top of the organization's hierarchy.

In other words, it's Bruce Allen.

Fans have long been critical of the team's president, who on the surface, is the first and final say in every decision made in regards to the team. It's no secret that fans of his -- save for Dan Snyder -- are virtually nonexistent. His record since taking over the Redskins is checkered at best, and it's because of his shortcomings that NFL.com named him as the league's second-worst general manager, with only Ryan Pace of the Chicago Bears behind him. "

Motivating players might be partly in the trustworthiness of he organization. I believe Scott Mcloughlin felt he could no longer be trustworthy, when his decisions were being reversed by Bruce Allen. Sua Cravens needed to be reassured in 2017, but Scott was out of the picture at that time.

"No one knew whether Su’a Cravens would play for the Washington Redskins again after he abruptly walked away shortly before the 2017 season. The team answered that question Wednesday when it traded the 22-year-old safety to the Denver Broncos, ending an odd two-year relationship that never saw the former second-round pick fulfill a massive amount of potential.

Washington will send Cravens to Denver in a swap of the teams’ fourth- and fifth-round draft picks, with the Broncos sending the Redskins an additional fifth-rounder, The Washington Post confirmed. The Redskins would also get the Broncos’ sixth-round pick in 2020 if Cravens plays in one playoff game for Denver."

Keeping implied promises to recruit supportive players is something that motivates individual players.

Scott had made implied promises to Kirk Cousins to have a supportive offense, in 2017, but Bruce Allen put more emphasis on Defense.

"In the event that the Redskins look to find a Day 2 pick at the guard position, they should probably turn their attention to some of the quality blockers in the SEC. One of the names to keep an eye on will be Braden Smith.

Smith (6-foot-6, 315 pounds) was one of the steadiest blockers on the Auburn line last season and did well to open up holes for Kerryon Johnson. He went under the radar because he played the guard position, but there’s no doubting that he will be a solid pro."

"I’m bullish on many of the players from Georgia in this year’s draft. I’ve spoken about my appreciation for Sony Michel and Roquan Smith in recent weeks, and this time, it’s Isaiah Wynn‘s turn to get some love.

Wynn was quietly one of the best offensive players for Georgia last season. He played the left tackle position and did a lot to give freshman Jake Fromm ample time to work in the pocket.

Back in January, I mocked Wynn to the New Orleans Saints at the No. 27 spot in my NFL Mock Draft. At the time, I said the following of his ability.
Wynn has played left tackle at Georgia, but some believe that he is best suited to play an interior position in the NFL. Given his 6-foot-2, 302 pound frame, that seems like a logical point. At the same time, Wynn should have the versatility to play tackle if needed, so that could come into play with that pick as well."

"There’s no question that Quenton Nelson is one of the best players in the draft. In fact, he’s probably the best player on the offensive side of the ball, though Saquon Barkley might have something to say about that. Nelson should be a sure-fire elite level starter at the NFL level and is one of the safest prospects at his position in the past decade.

Nelson was excellent in his final season at Notre Dame and did well to form a strong left side of the line with fellow first round prospect Mike McGlinchey. Nelson showed few weaknesses during the season and looks like a well-balanced, plug and play starter for the team that selects him.

In the event that Nelson is available with the No. 13 pick, the Redskins will have to consider taking him. The potential of having a line made up of Trent Williams, Nelson, Chase Roullier, Brandon Scherff, and Morgan Moses would be too much to pass up on. Instantly, they would have one of the best lines in the league and that would open up so much for their offense."

Redskins have not re-signed

Shawn Lauvao, G ,30
"The only question moving forward is whether or not the Redskins will keep Lauvao. If I had to guess, I would say that the odds are not in his favor. According to Spotrac.com, Lauvao has only one year left on his deal and the team could save a lot of cap space by cutting him. In fact, they would only have $1 million in dead cap space if they cut him. That would be better than the cap hit they would incur with him on the team.

At the end of the day, Lauvao and the Redskins should part ways. The Redskins have very few offensive weaknesses and can afford to try and upgrade Lauvao while still focusing on the defense. There are simply better options available than the veteran out of Arizona State."

Ryan Grant, Redskins

"Yikes. So, taken at face value, that would appear to suggest the only reason Grant remains on the team is because head coach Jay Gruden likes him a lot. Which would make sense — Gruden has come out and praised Grant time and again for his consistency and intelligence.

If you’re trying to be kind, perhaps you could interpret that as Grant being so much like a coach on the field that his last name might as well be Gruden, but that doesn’t seem to be where McCloughan was looking with that one."

Grant got a penalty that took the Redskins out of field goal range, and dropped a key pass.

I thought he was a good receiver and the kind of player who could help a team for many years.

"With their first two picks in the draft, the Redskins addressed both aspects of the rushing game, taking run-stuffing defensive lineman Da’Ron Payne in the first round and waiting patiently for the right time to draft Derrius Guice in the second.

Let’s be clear that neither player will get the job done in the rushing game all by himself. It takes all 11 defenders doing their jobs to defend the run. And while Guice is an upgrade at running back if the Redskins don’t get better blocking from the line, tight ends, and receivers they will continue spinning their wheels.

After addressing the running game on both sides of the ball, what's next for the Redskins? | NBC Sports Washington

"Christian, 6-5, 298, was a tackle in college but the Redskins presumably will try him both at tackle and on the inside. He was a basketball player in high school and his athletic ability carried over to the football field. He was a three-year starter for the Cardinals. According to scouting reports, he needs to add strength to his upper body and learn how to use his length as an asset in pass protection.
This on Christian is from an NFC offensive line coach via NFL.com:
"This is one of the most interesting tackles because he has potential. Some of these tackles like the UCLA kid (Kolton Miller) they aren't going to get much better. This kid just needs more experience and coaching and I think he will be a starter down the road."
