Okay....I have to shake my head at this one; Apparently one of the Russian Athletes at the winter Olympics has been using Performance Enhancing Drugs.

In Curling.

I don't know a lot about curling, so perhaps I can get some answers from some of you others....what exactly would be the enhancement for Curling?
I could understand why an athlete like, say...a powerlifter, might be tempted to use PED's.....but curling?

That kinda strikes as a bit like taking steroids to play video games.

Anyone know?

What about adderall?

The drug meldonium, while banned, has limited performance enchaining capabilities

Curling's cool. The only Curling Club in my state is actually pretty close.

As for the OP, I have no idea. Perhaps Russian abuse of performance enhancing drugs is so pervasive that they believe it could help ANYTHING. I can't see how it would help in curling unless Crovax is right: a stimulant to enhance concentration.

Which is the point of my question....why?

Why would someone use a banned substance that appears to provide no benefit to enhancing performance in a particular endeavor?

Curling is a much more physical sport than it is commonly given credit for so any drug which improved aerobic performance in competition or general fitness training could be beneficial.

Because it has medical uses

^^

Exactly.

CNN is reporting this drug is used to combat hardening of the arteries, and the OP article also states this.

It is banned in the Olympics though, because it increases blood-flow through the arteries, technically making it a "performance enhancing" drug.

It's a Russian developed & produced drug, limited in distribution apparently, and not even on the U.S. drug schedules.

Given the above, I thought it might be possible this guy simply made a naive mistake mistake. But at 25 years of age, why would he need a heart drug?

I'm confused. I thought the Russians were already banned because of that?

They are....but they are not competing for Russia, they are competing as independent athletes from Russia.

If they win the Gold, no Russian flag is raised, the Russian Anthem is not played.

Ahh. Thanks for the explanation!

How did the NCAA get to be involved in the Olympics? Talk about an organization with no teeth?

To be fair, even the NCAA has more integrity than the IOC. Like when Penn State or USC were banned from bowl games, they didn’t just let the team still play under a different name. There was no “Athletes from Penn State” or “Athletes from USC” teams in bowl games.

:stop: Please! When Ohio State players were found to have violated NCAA rules trading 'game day' worn paraphernalia for tattoos, the governing body suspended players, not for the upcoming Rose Bowl or whatever, but for games the following season. Then there is NCAA men's basketball........UNC, Louisville.........et al!
