I still remember giving a damn about bowl games. Cotton Bowl, Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl were all must see TV...maybe even a little interest in the Citrus Bowl and Fiesta as well. And, of course, all of the good bowl games were played on New Year's Day.
Back then Bowls were pretty logical. In the Rose, we knew the best Big Ten team would play the winner of the Pac 8. Typically this would be Ohio State or Michigan against USC, although sometimes an Illinois, Iowa or Purdue would sneak in to play UCLA or Washington. Orange bowl almost always had one of the independents like ND, FSU or Miami play an Oklahoma or Texas or Nebraska. The Sugar saw the SEC winner play someone like Clemson or whichever Big 8 team didn't go to the Orange Bowl. Good stuff.
I don't know exactly when this interest started to wane, but I know it died when they introduced the BCS. As if overnight, 90% of the bowl games no longer mattered at all. Suddenly, only one bowl game mattered--all the other games became irrelevant--and, it wasn't even played on New Year's Day.
Now, only two Bowl games matter. And, there are probably 40 which no one cares about at all. WTF?
