Now, this is a good idea. Paying men to play ball. Whodda thunk it?

LaVar Ball wants to start his own basketball league for HS graduates - Business Insider

Hopefully this pans out and puts some pressure on the NCAA. After all, if I'm a star athlete who could not care less about going to college, why would I go play for Duke when I can get paid to play for Ball?

Better coaching, better competition, a free college education to fall back on for the 99% of players who don’t make the NBA

You mean like the and1 team

Seriously? With one and done, who is getting an education or really being coached? Certainly not the superstars who would benefit by a paying league. Sounds like you haven't really thought this through.

My personal opinion is that LaVar Ball is a compete asshole . Having said that, this might be a positive since - and lets be brutally frank here as well as terribly politically incorrect - you have some kids who go to college to play a year or two of basketball who have no business going to that college in the first place and could never get in if they had to simply apply and be admitted like everyone else without consideration to them playing ball.

So this idea is fine with me.

True for those 10 or so kids. Who do they play against? Where will they play, who will pay so see them. Will they get paid enough to bypass college and the fringe benefits they get from boosters? Not to mention there is no fallback for kids who don't turn out to be stars.

College probably does benefit the average NCAA player. But, the stars and playground studs who don't qualify for college are the exciting ones to watch play.

True. There was a playground in Brooklyn when I grew up where all the best kids in the city went to play. People like Jabbar played there. Fun to watch. Not sure you can build a league around those kids.

I guess the case for the other side is the D league. Doubt if the NBA will back this idea as it would kill it's FREE minor league they have now.

The NBA only drafts 60 kids a year and most are multi year players, you think a league based on 10 players that will only stay for 1 year at a time is a viable business plan. Sounds like you really haven’t thought this through.

Jabbar? You mean Lew Alcindor who had a great college career at UCLA

yeah, that is the guy. Had a pretty good career in the pros as well.

People called Steve Jobs an asshole as well. Lavar Ball is a genius entrepreneur that has become a god-like figure in the basketball community. His kids are more popular than many NBA stars.

I wouldn't bet against Lavar and BBB. The guy has taken the basketball community by storm.

He has certainly found a way to exploit the zeitgeist. The man is a genius, in that respect.

He has taught his sons to be ball hogs and chuckers shooting at every opportunity contrary to team basketball. That personifies everything that is wrong with the game today.

Do you watch the Lakers?

His son is the PG, he probably passes the ball too much. His coach and teammates are begging that his son chuck the ball more!

I would sooner go blind that watch the Lakers. I have hated them for over fifty years and am not going to stop now. But I am glad to hear the kid plays the game right. So maybe I am wrong about this.

So which one of his kids scored nearly the hundred points then and was publicly ripped by Charles Barkley?

The youngest one.

Wow, first I heard of this.

The D-1 colleges have been serving as a minor league for the NFL and NBA for years. It's a cash cow for the colleges.

On the other hand, some athletes complete degrees while preparing for a professional sports career and that is not a bad thing.
Also, many college athletes do not go on to the pros, and if they have received education while playing that's not a bad thing either.

Can't imagine there are enough potential athletes at this juncture who would give up the college scholarship to try to claim some fame in a start up league.

Interesting...

His eldest son graduated from High School, played 1 year at UCLA, and was drafted by the Lakers.

His middle son was with UCLA but before playing 1 game, stole some sunglasses in China and now left UCLA.

His youngest son maybe the most talented. Right now he is being home schooled from a private tutor.

All 3 of the boys of their own shoe line.

Lonzo is probably the best pure passer to enter the league in 20 years.

LiAngelo is probably not NBA bound....at least not as a starter.

LaMelo is a pure shooter and has more instagram followers than the Kardashians (I made that last part up).
